Luxor Day Trips: Winter and Summer Plans
A day trip from Luxor in January and one in July are two different jobs. In winter the question is which temple to add, and in summer the question is how early you can leave and how much of the day the car’s air conditioning will carry.
Winter days, October to April
Temperatures stay comfortable, so the long northern run suits this season. Dendera, with its colourful astronomical ceiling, and Abydos, with the painted reliefs of Seti I and the Osireion, fit into one day of roughly 9 to 10 hours round trip. A private vehicle for the full day costs about EGP 2,000 to 3,500 and splits well between friends. Tours run daily, and your operator can tell you about current road arrangements and the start time. You can compare Dendera and Abydos tours before choosing a private car or a group seat.
Winter days to the south
Edfu lies about 110 km south. The Temple of Horus is among the best preserved of all, and visitors often reach the gate by horse carriage. Kom Ombo is a double temple shared by Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris the falcon god, with a small crocodile museum beside it. Aswan and Philae are about 220 km south. The temple stands on Agilkia Island, reached by motorboat, and the day can also take in the Unfinished Obelisk and the High Dam. Go by train or private car and treat it as a very full day.
Closer options
El-Kab, about 80 km south, has rock-cut tombs and the mudbrick walls of ancient Nekheb. Colossi, Medinet Habu and the west bank sights are a half-day from the city, and the sightseeing page covers them.
Summer days, June to August
At 42 to 46C, an open-air temple after 10:00 is hard going. Leave at dawn, visit the temple while the stone is cool, and spend the middle hours in the car. Choose one stop rather than two, and carry two litres of water per person. Dendera alone is a better summer outing than the double. Edfu and Kom Ombo are best done from a cruise, where the boat gives you shade between visits.
Checks before you go
Ask what the vehicle price includes, since entrance fees may be extra. The UK government’s Egypt travel advice names Luxor, Qina and Aswan among areas outside its warnings, and the Tourist Police number is 126. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists the official sites.
Tip: for Dendera and Abydos, book the first pickup of the day, ideally before 06:30, and ask your driver to do Dendera first.
