Mecca Day Trips by Season
Travel advisory: The United States asks travellers to reconsider visits to Saudi Arabia given the wider regional conflict, including Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities. UK restrictions apply to the Yemen border region and to Abha and Khamis Mushait, so Mecca, Jeddah and Taif sit outside them. Confirm on travel.state.gov and gov.uk .
Each day trip from Mecca has a best month, and picking by season saves a wasted journey.
Entry to Mecca’s Haram area is restricted to Muslims under Saudi law, enforced at road checkpoints that check ID or visa. Jeddah and Taif are open to all visitors; Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque is for Muslims.
Spring: Taif and its roses
Taif sits at about 1,800 m in the Hejaz mountains, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from Mecca by road along the Al-Hada route. Its rose farms produce the famous Taif rose oil, and the Rose Festival ran from 29 March to 11 April in 2026. Dates for 2027 have not been announced, so watch the official Saudi tourism channels. Expect orchards, rose distilleries, the Al-Hada cable car and the old-city gate. A private taxi or ride-hail round trip costs roughly 250 to 400 SAR (about US$67 to 107), so agree on a price first. Summer: go up, not out
The Meccan summer pushes past 45C, which makes the hills the one sensible escape. Taif is noticeably cooler. Keep any lowland walking to before 08:00 or after sunset. Hajj 2024’s heat toll, at least 1,301 deaths above 50C, shows why shade and rest breaks are not optional.
Winter: Jeddah and Medina
Cooler months suit the Haramain rail trips. Jeddah’s Al-Balad, a UNESCO old town, is about 30 to 45 minutes away by train and then a short taxi. Look for coral-stone tower houses, carved wooden roshan windows and the spice stalls of Souq Al-Alawi. For Muslim visitors, Medina is about 2 hours by train, with a Nusuk permit needed for the Rawdah and a once-a-year limit per person. Fares vary by class and date, with economy to Medina from about 150 SAR and business much higher. Check sar.hhr.sa .
Hajj week
During the Hajj week, visitors who are not performing Hajj are stopped from flying to Jeddah, Medina and Taif, according to the UK FCDO. Do not plan a day trip for those days.
