Mecca Sights from Dawn to Midnight
Travel advisory: The US advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have struck Saudi cities. Mecca’s landmarks look different at each hour, and the sensible schedule follows the sun.
Entry to Mecca’s Haram area is restricted to Muslims under Saudi law, enforced at road checkpoints that check ID or visa. The sights below are for Muslim visitors. Jeddah, covered at the end, is open to all.
Before sunrise
Fajr is the calmest and coolest time at the Masjid al-Haram. The mosque covers over 356,000 square metres and can hold up to 2.5 million worshippers at peak times. It surrounds the Kaaba, draped in black silk Kiswah, with the Black Stone on its eastern corner and Maqam Ibrahim nearby. The mosque is open around the clock, admission is free, and Umrah visitors need a Nusuk permit from nusuk.sa .
Early morning
Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira are climbed in the first hours, from the Hira Cultural District at the base. The staircase has about 1,200 to 1,750 steps depending on the count, with a climb of roughly 270 m. Start before 05:00 and be down by 08:30.
Midday
Stay indoors. The Clock Tower museum, on floors high in the Abraj Al-Bait tower, is open to Muslim visitors with tiered tickets; see theclocktowers.com . The complex has seven hotel towers rising to 601 metres. Midday heat in summer can pass 45C, so rest or pray in cooled halls from about 11:00 to 16:30.
Afternoon
Take the road east to Mina, 8 km away, with its tent city of more than 100,000 air-conditioned tents and the multi-level Jamarat Bridge. Arafat’s Jabal al-Rahmah, a 70-metre granite hill 20 km east, is where the Farewell Sermon was delivered in 632 CE. Outside Hajj, check locally for access arrangements, since these sites are open ground with little infrastructure.
Evening and night
The clock face is lit by about two million LEDs and visible up to 25 km away. After Isha, the courtyards are cooler and the lights are at their best. Keep the walk short and drink water.
Without a Muslim travelling companion
