Mecca Walks Graded Easy to Demanding
Travel advisory: The US government recommends reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia amid regional conflict; Houthi missiles and drones have targeted Saudi cities. Mecca’s walks run from a cool indoor stroll to a climb that needs a pre-dawn start, so choose by effort.
Entry to Mecca’s Haram area is restricted to Muslims under Saudi law, enforced at road checkpoints that check ID or visa. These routes are for Muslim visitors.
Easy: the Grand Mosque halls
Inside the Masjid al-Haram, the Ottoman arcade around the Mataf courtyard leads into the King Fahd halls and the large King Abdullah expansion. Marble floors are cooled from below and large domes slide open for daylight. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Go after Isha or between Fajr and sunrise, and have a Nusuk permit from nusuk.sa if you are on Umrah.
Moderate: the walk to Jannat al-Mu’alla
From the northern side of the Haram, a short walk north leads to Jannat al-Mu’alla, where Khadijah bint Khuwaylid and other early companions are buried. The visit is a quiet ziyarah. Keep voices low and do not photograph graves. Go in daylight outside prayer times; a short walk, but heat on asphalt adds up.
Demanding: Jabal al-Nour
The climb to the Cave of Hira, from the Hira Cultural District at the base, takes about 1.5 to 2 hours up. Sources count between about 1,200 and 1,750 steps on the paved staircase, a rise of roughly 270 m. Start before 05:00 to reach the top at dawn and be down before 08:30. Rules of thumb for every route
- Summer highs reach 45 to 50C, and in Hajj 2024 at least 1,301 people died in heat above 50C.
- Walk only before 08:00 or after sunset, and rest from about 11:00 to 16:30.
- Drink water before you are thirsty, use shade and cooling points.
- Tell someone your route.
Getting to the start

Walking elsewhere
