Naples Day Trips Ranked by Journey Time
Rank Naples day trips by the clock and a clear order appears: 20 minutes to Herculaneum, 35 to Pompeii, about 50 across the water to Capri. Each journey leaves from one of two places, so the real planning is knowing which station or quay you need.
20 minutes: Herculaneum
Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi, the lower level of Napoli Centrale, to Ercolano Scavi. A one-way fare is EUR2.60 to EUR3.60. Entry is EUR16, EUR2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 24 and free under 18. Hours are 8:30 to 19:30 (last entry 18:00) until 14 October, then 8:30 to 17:00 (last entry 15:30). 35 minutes: Pompeii
Stay on the same line toward Sorrento and get off at Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri. Pompeii lies 25 km from the city, so it needs a full day. Tickets are named and daily numbers are capped at 20,000. The Express ticket is EUR20 and Pompeii+ is EUR25. Anyone near the station offering a queue-jump voucher is not official, so buy only at pompeiisites.org .

About an hour: Vesuvius
Allow roughly an hour by train and shuttle to reach the trailhead. There is no ticket window at the top: the EUR10 Gran Cono ticket (EUR8 under 25, plus a booking fee) is sold online for a named visitor and a time slot, and you may enter from 40 minutes before to 100 minutes after it. Trail hours change by month, running 9:00 to 16:00 in October and 9:00 to 15:00 from November to February. Details are on the Vesuvius park site .
50 minutes: Capri, Ischia and Procida
Hydrofoils for Capri and Ischia leave from Molo Beverello and take 45 to 50 minutes. Expect about EUR21 to EUR30 each way for Capri, and about EUR23 to EUR26 for Ischia. A slower Caremar ferry to Capri starts around EUR14. The Capri landing fee of EUR5, charged April to October, is included in the ticket. The Blue Grotto is reported at EUR18 to EUR19 in cash and shuts when the sea is rough. For Procida, ferries also leave Molo Beverello, which is the easier departure point. Longer days: Caserta, Sorrento, Amalfi
The Reggia di Caserta is reached by direct train from Napoli Centrale and sits about five minutes’ walk from the station. It opens 8:30 to 19:00 and closes on Tuesdays. Sorrento is the end of the Circumvesuviana line. For the Amalfi Coast, SITA Sud buses run Sorrento to Positano for about EUR2.40, and a 24-hour COSTIERASITA pass is about EUR10. Leaving the city safely
Wear bags on your front at Piazza Garibaldi and on the Circumvesuviana. The Phlegraean Fields west of Naples sit at a yellow volcanic alert and Metro Line 2 does not currently serve Pozzuoli, so aim your day trips at the Vesuvius side and the islands. Leave the rental car behind: the camera-enforced centre has gate-by-gate hours, and fines run roughly EUR80 to EUR335 plus fees. The Comune explains each gate on its ZTL page .
