Fire Island: Which Ferry, Which Town
Book the wrong LIRR station for Fire Island and you’ll arrive at a ferry dock that simply doesn’t go where you’re headed. Three routes exist, and they are not interchangeable.
Three stations, three sets of communities. The LIRR runs from Penn Station to Bay Shore, Sayville, or Patchogue, each about 90 minutes to 2 hours and $15-20 one-way, then connects to a passenger ferry. Bay Shore’s ferry reaches Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Dunewood, Atlantique, Ocean Beach, Seaview, and Ocean Bay Park. Sayville’s ferry reaches Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, Sunken Forest, and Water Island. Patchogue’s ferry reaches Davis Park and Watch Hill. Sending someone bound for Cherry Grove to the Bay Shore terminal is a real, avoidable mistake, not a minor inconvenience, since these ferries don’t cross-connect between communities. Fire Island’s residential communities are genuinely car-free, unlike the Hamptons further east. Check current ferry schedules for the Sayville route, and confirm your destination community before buying a ticket at any of the three stations.
Two Hudson Valley museums, one train stop, not one day. Storm King Art Center and Dia:Beacon both start from the same Metro-North ride to Beacon, about 1h40 from Grand Central. Dia:Beacon is an 8-10 minute walk from the station; Storm King needs a seasonal shuttle or taxi for its remaining 14 miles, no walk option. Both charge $25 admission, and Storm King runs April-November, Wednesday-Monday, closed Tuesdays. Trying both in one day without a car is a rushed plan; treat them as two separate trips. The practical single-city option. Philadelphia stays the most straightforward day trip on this list: Amtrak’s Northeast Regional or Keystone runs Penn Station to 30th Street Station in about 1h20-1h30 for $28-60, or Greyhound, Megabus, and FlixBus cover the same route in 2-2.5 hours for $19-35.
Outlet shopping, two different products. Woodbury Common Premium Outlets is reachable by regular scheduled coach (Rockland Coaches, Shortline) from Port Authority for $10-23 one-way, or by a dedicated round-trip shopping shuttle from Grand Central or Bryant Park at a flat roundtrip rate around $40. These solve different problems, general transit versus a one-day shopping trip, and treating them as the same bus is how people either overpay or underplan.
