Day Trips from Odense
Day trips are one of Odense’s real strengths. It sits in the middle of Funen (Fyn) and on the main Copenhagen to Aarhus rail line, so castles, Viking history and coastal towns are all within easy reach. Times below are approximate, and fares are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro. Check the DSB timetable before you travel.
Egeskov Castle
Egeskov, near Kvaerndrup about 30 minutes south (roughly 30 minutes by train to Kvaerndrup), is the standout. It is a moated Renaissance castle built in 1554, among Europe’s best-preserved island castles, with award-winning gardens, a treetop walk, a hedge maze, veteran car and motorcycle museums, and a large playground. The interior opens roughly mid-April to mid-October, about 11:00 to 17:00; the grounds run longer in daylight, and parking is free. Buy tickets online and save: 265 DKK for an adult against 285 DKK at the gate.
Kerteminde and the Ladby ship
About 30 to 40 minutes northeast, Kerteminde is a pretty coastal town with two draws: the Ladby Viking Museum, home to Denmark’s only Viking ship grave, a royal burial from around 925 AD displayed in a reconstructed mound on its original site; and Fjord&Belt, where you can see harbour porpoises and seals up close.
Nyborg
Around 20 to 30 minutes east, Nyborg has a medieval royal castle that was the seat of the Danehof, Denmark’s early parliament, and where the country’s first constitution was signed in 1282. It has seen major restoration in recent years, so check what is open before you go.
Coast and islands to the south
Svendborg, on southern Funen, is the gateway to the South Funen Archipelago, with ferries out to Aero and smaller isles. Faaborg, in the southwest, is an old harbour town near Svanninge Bakker, the gently rolling “Funen Alps,” with ferries to Lyo, Avernako and Bjorno.
Bigger cities by rail
Two larger cities work as long day trips. Copenhagen is about 1h15 to 1h35 by train, and Aarhus, with the ARoS art museum and Den Gamle By open-air town, is roughly 1h15 to 1h30. Both are doable in a day, though an early start helps.
