Odense makes a good hub for a slower trip across Funen and beyond. This is gentle countryside, coast, castles and small towns rather than a wilderness expedition, so set the pace low and let the islands and the rail line do the work. Fares are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro, and times are approximate (verify on the DSB timetable).
A South Funen and Aero loop
The classic multi-day route heads south from Odense toward Svendborg and Faaborg, then out to Aero for an overnight. Aeroskobing, on Aero, is one of Denmark’s best-preserved old towns, all cobbles and painted houses, and it rewards staying the night rather than rushing a day trip. Ferries run from Svendborg (about 1h15) or Faaborg to Soby (about 1 hour). With two or three days you can add island-hopping to Lyo or Avernako in the South Funen Archipelago.
A Funen cycling tour
Odense brands itself Denmark’s cycling capital, and Funen as a whole is prime, easy cycle-touring country. A multi-day loop using Odense as the hub links the river paths, forests, the fjord, and quiet lanes out to the coast and the castles. It is flat and manageable, which makes it a good first cycle-touring trip.
A rail route across Denmark
Odense sits midway on the main Copenhagen to Aarhus line, so it slots naturally into a longer rail itinerary. A common shape is Copenhagen, then Odense, then Aarhus or onward into Jutland, spending a night or two in each. Copenhagen is about 1h15 to 1h35 away and Aarhus roughly 1h15 to 1h30, so travel days stay short.
Castles and coast at a slower pace
With more time you can spread the Funen day-trip sights across several days: Egeskov Castle and its gardens near Kvaerndrup, the Ladby Viking ship and Fjord&Belt around Kerteminde, and Nyborg’s medieval royal castle to the east. Staying out in Svendborg or Faaborg for a night lets you reach the ferries early.
Planning notes
Book Aero accommodation ahead in summer, as beds are limited. Pack layers and a waterproof, and confirm ferry and train times close to your dates, since off-season services thin out.
