Odense is a comfortable city for families. It is flat, walkable and stitched together with Hans Christian Andersen storybook appeal, and it has a genuinely good zoo plus solid rainy-day backup. Most of the big draws are close together in or near the centre. Prices are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro.
Odense Zoo
The zoo is the headline day out. It holds more than 2,000 animals across about 147 species, with an indoor South-America rainforest called the Oceanium, plus giraffes, penguins, tigers, lemurs and manatees, and daily keeper feedings and talks. Adult tickets are about 250 DKK and children (3 to 11) about 150 DKK on the official site, though some sources quote lower seasonal prices, so verify. It is open roughly 09:00 to 18:00 by season, and you can reach it on foot, by bike, or on the river cruise.
Fairy tales and history
H.C. Andersens Hus, the underground museum that opened in 2021, has a dedicated children’s cultural centre, and the ticket covers the small Childhood Home nearby; under-18s are free but still need a booked ticket. For a hands-on history stop, Den Fynske Landsby (the Funen Village) is an open-air museum in the Fruens Boge woods with 25 historic buildings and space for children to roam.
On the water
The Odense Aafart river cruise has run since 1882 and is a favourite with children. It links Munke Mose in the centre to the zoo and the forest, and tickets are return, so you can break the trip at the zoo. Adult return is about 125 DKK and child 95 DKK, with a season of roughly April to October.
Rainy-day backup
Danish weather turns fast, so it helps to have indoor options ready. Jumping Fun is a large trampoline park with foam pits and a jump tower; Bowl’n’Fun combines bowling, indoor karting, laser tag and minigolf; and GoMonkey is an outdoor high-ropes park for older children. A little further out, Terrariet Reptile Zoo at Vissenbjerg, about 15 km west, is a strong wet-weather choice.
Getting around
Distances are short and the cycle network is excellent, so a family bike hire along the river is easy and cheap. Pack layers and a waterproof whatever the forecast.
