Philippine day outings by travel time
Most places that look close on a Philippine map are not. Roads are slow, boats follow tides and weather, and the islands are separate, so a good out-and-back day is measured in hours door to door. The list below runs from the shortest outing to the longest, with the hub you start from.
About two hours each way
Tagaytay ridge, from Manila. About 60 km south by SLEX and CALAX, so 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. The ridge sits near 600 m, a few degrees cooler than the capital, and looks down on Taal Lake and the volcano island. The island is a permanent danger zone with no landings and no lake boating, so the viewpoints along the ridge are the whole outing. Lunch is bulalo, a beef-marrow soup, then sweet pineapple and espasol from roadside stands. Sonya’s Garden is the usual stop for flower salads.
Two to three and a half hours each way
Underground River, from Puerto Princesa. The park at Sabang is about two hours north by van. It caps entry at 900 visitors a day, and the permit costs ₱500 plus ₱150 environmental fee. Mount Pinatubo crater lake, from Manila. Leave about 03:00 to 04:00 for the 2.5-hour drive to Capas, Tarlac. Then comes an hour in a 4x4 across grey lahar fields and a 30 to 45 minute walk up a gorge to a turquoise crater lake. Packages of roughly ₱2,500 to ₱3,500 a head usually need four or five people.
Kawasan Falls canyoneering, from Cebu City. Badian is about 3 to 3.5 hours south. The river trek takes 3 to 4 hours through a limestone canyon, with swims, natural slides and optional jumps from 3 m to 10 m. A guide, life vest and helmet are mandatory. Expect roughly ₱1,500 a person, and take reef shoes.
A very long day: Bohol from Cebu
Bohol is a separate island, and the crossing is by sea. The fast OceanJet ferry from Cebu Pier 1 to Tagbilaran takes about 2 hours and costs ₱880 in tourist class each way. Sailings begin about 05:10, so an early start leaves time for a loop by pre-booked van or tricycle:
- Carmen Chocolate Hills. The deck is about 214 steps and costs ₱150 for non-resident adults, ₱75 for children 6 to 12.
- Corella tarsier sanctuary. A small cash entry fee, with quiet voices, no flash and no touching.
- Baclayon Church. A coral-stone church dating to 1727.
- Loboc River. A lunch cruise, about ₱850 for the buffet.
Check sailings on oceanjet.net and leave plenty of margin for the last boat back at around 17:30. Many travellers prefer to stay a night on Bohol instead.
Islands that need a night
Boracay, Palawan and Bohol are reached by flight or ferry from Manila, so treat them as overnight stays. If you are based in Manila, spend the day on Tagaytay or Pinatubo and save the islands for a multi-day plan like the one on the multi-day trips page .
Before you set out
- Season. Habagat, roughly June to November, brings storms and Coast Guard boat suspensions. Amihan, roughly November to April, is the calmer window.
- Cash. Bring pesos for fees, tricycles and lunch.
- Base. For Kawasan and Bohol, search Cebu City stays on Booking.com near Pier 1 or the south bus terminal.
- Timing. Be back at the pier an hour before the last sailing, and never make an international flight the evening after a boat day.
