Big Multi-Day Routes Across Indonesia
The trips worth clearing extra days for in Indonesia are the ones that cross something real: a strait, a caldera rim, a tectonic boundary. Here are the three that reward it most.
Java overland: rail and two volcanoes, 7-10 days
Start in Jakarta and take the Whoosh high-speed line to Bandung in 30-45 minutes at 350 km/h, tickets from around IDR 150,000 in premium economy. Executive trains then cross West Java’s rice terraces to Yogyakarta for three days centered on Borobudur, Prambanan, and the Sultan’s Kraton, before continuing by rail to Probolinggo or Malang for the Mount Bromo sunrise jeep run and on to Banyuwangi for the midnight blue-fire hike at Kawah Ijen. A 30-minute ASDP ferry across the Bali Strait (about IDR 10,000) lands you in Gilimanuk to close the loop. The whole route runs on PT KAI’s punctual, air-conditioned network, bookable at kai.id , so you are watching volcanoes out the window instead of sitting in traffic.
Komodo National Park by phinisi, 3D2N
A traditional Bugis wooden schooner sails from Labuan Bajo through Kelor Island, Manjarite’s reef, and Kalong Island, where thousands of giant fruit bats lift off the mangroves at sunset. Day two brings Padar’s panoramic sunrise hike, Pink Beach, a ranger-led Komodo or Rinca dragon trek, and Manta Point, before a last day around Kanawa Island’s reef fish. Shared-cabin trips run IDR 2,800,000-4,500,000 per person; private charters climb well past IDR 25,000,000 for the boat. Compare current sailings on GetYourGuide .
Mount Rinjani, 3,726 metres, 3D2N or 4D3N
Lombok’s volcano climbs from Senaru or Sembalun village. Day one crosses savanna to the Sembalun crater rim at 2,639m for a night camped over the caldera; day two is a 02:00 summit push across loose scree for sunrise, followed by a descent to the turquoise Segara Anak crater lake and its hot springs; day three exits through rainforest via the Senaru rim. A licensed guide and porters are legally required and bookable through registered trekking companies listed at rinjaninationalpark.id , with packages running IDR 2,500,000-4,000,000 per person including tents and food. One date rule matters more than any other here: the entire national park closes every year from 1 January to 31 March for monsoon recovery, reopening 1 April, and that closure is confirmed again for the 2026 season.
