Fit Indonesia Into One Big Day
Indonesia is islands, not a road network, so a day trip only works when it starts from a real hub and stays honest about drive times. Here is what genuinely fits into a single day from four of them, and what does not.
Out of Yogyakarta: two temples, one car
Borobudur sits 42 km northwest of the city, about an hour and 15 minutes by road; Prambanan is 50 km east, roughly an hour and a half. An 8-hour private car with driver covers both temples plus lunch for around IDR 550,000-700,000, and you can check current rates on Viator . For something wilder from the same base, Jomblang Cave in Gunungkidul lowers visitors 60 metres by rope into Grubug Cave to see the “Light of Heaven” sunbeam (IDR 500,000, capped at 80 people a day, mandatory 09:30 arrival), then continues to Timang Beach for a hand-cranked wooden gondola ride across the surf.
Out of Ubud: island-hopping without sleeping over
Speedboats leave Sanur Harbor for Nusa Penida in 40-45 minutes (IDR 150,000-200,000 each way), reaching a west-coast circuit of Kelingking’s T-Rex cliff, Broken Beach, and Angel’s Billabong. Do not swim at Kelingking: unpredictable shore-break waves and strong currents have drowned tourists here, and the crumbling cliff path down takes 1.5-2 hours round trip in full sun. Look from the top instead. Closer to Ubud, Bedugul’s Pura Ulun Danu Bratan water temple (IDR 75,000) and the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces (IDR 50,000) make a calmer 1.5-hour highland loop.
Out of Jakarta: islands or a botanical garden
Speedboats from Marina Ancol reach the Thousand Islands (Pari, Pramuka, Sepa, Macan) in one to two hours, round trip IDR 350,000-800,000, for snorkelling and mangrove walks away from the capital’s traffic. For a shorter escape, the KRL Commuterline runs from Jakarta Kota or Manggarai to Bogor in about an hour for IDR 5,000, landing you at the 87-hectare Kebun Raya Bogor botanical gardens (entry IDR 25,500), founded in 1817 around the Presidential Palace.
Out of Labuan Bajo: five stops, one boat
A shared speedboat departing 06:00 covers Padar Island’s 818-step sunrise hike, a ranger-led Komodo dragon trek, Pink Beach snorkelling, the Taka Makassar sandbar, and Manta Point, returning around 17:00 for IDR 1,350,000-1,600,000 per person plus park fees.
What is not a day trip
Tana Toraja is not doable from Bali or Jakarta in a day.
