Vila Day Trips: Cascades to Tanna's Yasur
Some of Port Vila’s best day trips need no more than a rental car and a full tank of gas; the most memorable one needs a plane ticket and a walk to the rim of an active volcano.
Efate Island, on your own schedule
The 130 km Efate Ring Road is fully sealed and drivable in an easy day, with three stops worth building the route around. Mele Cascades, 10 km northwest of town, delivers a rope-guided walk up a forested canyon to turquoise limestone pools below a 35-meter waterfall; entry is about 2,000 VT for adults, cash only, and the Vanuatu Tourism Office’s own listing confirms the on-site facilities. On the island’s east side, roughly 40 minutes’ drive away, the Blue Lagoon at Eton Beach combines banyan-tree rope swings with a tidal pool where fresh springs meet the ocean, for about 1,500 VT per adult, also cash only; the Tourism Office’s Blue Holes page covers it alongside Efate’s other freshwater swimming spots. Havannah Harbour, on the northwest coast, adds a WWII naval history stop and the launch point for Chief Roi Mata’s Domain, below.
Chief Roi Mata’s Domain (UNESCO)
Vanuatu’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008 , spans three locations connected to a 17th-century paramount chief: his residence, the site of his death, and his burial ground on Artok (Hat Island), reached by boat from Havannah Harbour with a stop at Fels Cave on Lelepa Island along the way. A full-day rainforest and Chief Roi Mata tour with BBQ lunch is bookable on Viator , and it is the more straightforward way to see all three sites in one outing rather than arranging boat access independently.
Pele Island, for a quieter beach day
Off Efate’s north coast, Pele Island trades the mainland’s cascades and lagoons for a slower village-hospitality day: white sand, a shallow swimming beach, and lunch with a local family, reached by a short boat crossing arranged through Havannah Harbour operators.
Tanna Island and Mount Yasur
The one day trip that leaves Efate entirely is the flight south to Tanna to stand at the rim of Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes, watching it throw Strombolian lava bombs into the evening sky from a 4x4 ride across the ash plain. Air Vanuatu entered liquidation in May 2024 and now runs a reduced, domestic-only network, so do not assume the airline you remember still flies this route on the old schedule; Unity Airlines currently operates Tanna volcano day tours out of Port Vila, and a full-day Mount Yasur tour including transfers is bookable on Viator . Confirm the current flight schedule directly before locking in a departure date, since island routes have been restored gradually through 2026 rather than all at once.
If you’re arriving by cruise ship
Port Vila’s cruise terminal is currently a tender port, not a berthing one: ships anchor offshore and passengers come ashore by tender boat, a legacy of wharf damage from the December 2024 earthquake. That arrangement eats into the hours you actually have on land, so a half-day Mele Cascades or Blue Lagoon trip fits a cruise call far better than an ambitious Tanna flight, which needs a full day and is not realistic between a morning tender and an evening departure.
Booking and verdict
Check the Efate round-island day tour on GetYourGuide if a guided circuit beats self-driving, or browse the Blue Lagoon swim experience for a shorter half-day option. For most visitors with two or three free days, a self-drive Efate loop plus a booked Chief Roi Mata excursion covers the strongest ground; save the Tanna flight for a trip where you have a spare full day and a confirmed return schedule.
Before you go
Carry small vatu notes for every entry fee on Efate, since none of the cascades or lagoons take cards, and pack a dry bag for the boat crossings to Lelepa, Artok, or Pele. If your day trip depends on a same-day flight to Tanna, build in a buffer day afterward in case weather or a schedule change on the reduced domestic network pushes your return.
