Day Trips To and From San Marino

Over 85% of San Marino’s roughly 2 million annual visitors never sleep there; they arrive, walk the towers, and leave the same afternoon. That makes “day trips” a two-way question here: San Marino as the destination, and San Marino as a base for exploring the Italian borderlands around it. Both are real, and they need different logistics.
San Marino as the day trip
From Rimini it is 20 kilometres and about 50 minutes on the Bonelli/Benedettini shuttle bus, EUR 7.00 each way, departing hourly opposite Rimini’s FS railway station. From Bologna, figure roughly 1 hour 45 minutes: a regional or Frecciarossa train to Rimini, then the same bus. From Florence, closer to 2.5 to 3 hours by car over the Apennine passes, or via Bologna by rail. From Pesaro or Urbino, San Marino is 45 to 60 minutes by car. A workable day: ride the Funivia up from Borgo Maggiore, buy the Pass Multi Museo (EUR 11.00, or EUR 8.00 reduced), walk the towers and the Passo delle Streghe, eat piadina for lunch, and leave before the 16:30 coach rush clears out.
Day trips out of San Marino, into Montefeltro
Stay overnight and San Marino becomes a genuine base for the Montefeltro region: San Leo (27 km, 35 to 40 minutes), a cliff-top fortress where the occultist Count of Cagliostro died a papal prisoner in 1795; Verucchio (14 km, 20 minutes), cradle of the Malatesta dynasty with Villanovan amber in its archaeological museum; Gradara (35 km, 40 minutes), the double-walled castle Dante set Paolo and Francesca’s story in; and Urbino (45 km, 55 minutes), Raphael’s UNESCO-listed birthplace with Piero della Francesca paintings in the Palazzo Ducale.
There is no direct public bus linking San Marino to any of these. Getting to San Leo, Verucchio or Gradara without your own transport means a rental car, a taxi, or backtracking to Rimini to catch Italian regional transit, so check car availability on DiscoverCars before you assume a bus will get you there.

The practical rule: pick one direction per day. Trying to squeeze San Leo and the full San Marino towers circuit into a single afternoon means rushing both, and the drive back through the checkpoint-free border at Dogana takes longer at dusk than the map distance suggests.
