Day Trips Around Shakhrisabz and Kitab

Shakhrisabz works as a day trip, and it is not much of a launch point for others. That is the main thing to know when planning. Below, the standard Samarkand outing is laid out hour by hour, followed by the few side stops in Kitab district and the options that fall short.

The day, hour by hour

Hours 1 and 2: the road. Leave Samarkand early. The route runs 80 to 90 km south over the Takhtakaracha Pass, which peaks at about 1,650 m, and takes roughly two hours in normal conditions.

Hours 3 to 5: the monuments. Start at Ak-Saray, then walk the paved axis to the covered bazaar, Dorut Tilavat and Dorus Saodat. Tickets are sold site by site, at around 40,000 UZS (about USD 3) each.

Hour 6: lunch. A teahouse serving tandir gosht, the regional mutton dish, is the usual choice.

Hours 7 and 8: the road back. Many drivers stop at the pass viewpoint on the way down. The full round trip leaves about three to four hours on site, which is enough for the main sights and little else.

Hiring a driver or joining a group

Winter on the pass

Heavy snow or ice closes the Takhtakaracha section of the M-39 from time to time. Closures have been reported in December 2021, January 2022, January 2024 and December 2024. Side stop: Kitab State Geological Reserve

The reserve, set up in 1979, covers 5,378 ha in Kitab district. The Zinzilban section is the global reference point for the base of the Devonian Emsian stage, chosen in 1989 and ratified in 1996. A 2019 report said it would open to visitors after years restricted to scientists. Go through a local operator or the reserve office, reportedly in Shakhrisabz, and do not turn up unannounced. Side stop: Hisorak Reservoir

The reservoir on the Oqsuv river, built in the Soviet era, lies around 35 km from the city near Miroqi village. Tourism there has only been proposed so far, so it does not make a day by itself. A kun.uz article covers its background.

Trips to skip
