Planning a Timurid Attractions Tour
A tour of Shakhrisabz is easiest to judge if you know the sites in advance. Use the notes below to decide which tour fits, then use the checklist at the end to compare what sellers actually include.
Stop-by-stop notes
Ak-Saray. Begun in 1380, the palace was destroyed in the 16th century. The surviving pair of entrance pylons stands about 38 m high, with a vault span of 22 m. Tours treat it as an outdoor stop, and a bronze Timur statue marks the grounds.
Dorut Tilavat. This complex pairs the tomb of Sheikh Shamsiddin Kulol with the Kok Gumbaz mosque, commissioned by Ulugh Beg in 1435, and the Gumbazi Seyidon mausoleum of about 1438.
Dorus Saodat. Jahangir, Timur’s eldest son, and Umar Shaykh lie here. The crypt behind the complex was fitted out for Timur himself, who now rests at Gur-e Amir in Samarkand. A wooden door opens onto a bare chamber with a marble casket.
Optional extras. The Chorsu bazaar and its bathhouse can be added in a short stop. The Amir Temur Museum gives a roofed break.

Checklist before you pay
- Does the price include entry tickets? Tickets are sold per site, at around 40,000 UZS (about USD 3) each, and the museum is around 30,000 UZS.
- Who is the guide, and does the tour include the crypt at Dorus Saodat?
- How long is the drive each way? Around two hours is normal over the Takhtakaracha Pass.
- What happens if snow closes the pass? Closures after heavy snow have been reported in several winters.
- Is lunch included, and where is the stop?
- What is the dress expectation at the tombs? Cover shoulders and knees, with hair covered for women inside the mosques and mausolea.
