On Foot in Shakhrisabz

Walking is the natural way to see Shakhrisabz, and the layout makes it easy. Ak-Saray, the bazaar and the tomb complexes are strung along a paved park axis, so a single linear route covers nearly everything. The sections below cover the route, how to pace it and the rules to follow at each stop.

Allow two to three hours for the whole route including entries. Go by the clock, not by distance.

Pace and timing

Shade on the axis is thin. Begin early in the morning or after the afternoon heat, and carry water. The museum and the covered bazaar break up the exposed stretches. In winter, the main worry is the road from Samarkand, where heavy snow or ice can close the Takhtakaracha Pass, so check the day before.

Rules for the tombs

Dorut Tilavat and Dorus Saodat are active places of prayer, so walk through them as a guest. Keep your voice low, cover shoulders and knees, and for women, add a head covering inside the mosques and mausolea. Shoes come off at carpeted thresholds, so choose a pair that slips on and off. The crypt behind Dorus Saodat was prepared for Timur, whose actual tomb is in Samarkand.

Beyond the main axis

Away from the monuments, a few residential lanes with courtyard houses remain. Ask permission before photographing people or their doorways, and do not step into private courtyards. Much of the older mahalla and bazaar fabric between Ak-Saray and the southern monuments was cleared in the 2014 to 2016 redevelopment, so do not expect a continuous old quarter.

Rides on the axis

Electric carts, using 14-seat vehicles, have run on the axis since 2016. Check locally whether they are in service and what they charge. They are useful for a tired group, though the walk itself is the point.

What to carry

Pack cash in Uzbek som (UZS), because tickets are around 40,000 UZS (about USD 3) per site and the museum is around 30,000 UZS. Take a scarf, a hat and a water bottle.
