Not every “day trip” from Vienna actually fits into a day. Hallstatt is the clearest offender: roughly 285km and three hours by car, or three and a half to four hours by train plus a lake ferry, which makes it an overnight rather than a rushed there-and-back. The four trips below genuinely work in a single day.
Bratislava, 56 Minutes Away
Slovakia’s capital sits closer to Vienna by train than some Vienna suburbs. Since the line’s October 2025 electrification, the REX service covers the route in as little as 56 minutes, running roughly hourly. Both countries share the euro and the Schengen zone, so there’s no border stop and no money to change, just a different city, castle, and Old Town for the cost of a train ticket. The Wachau Valley
About an hour by direct train from Wien Westbahnhof to Melk, this stretch of the Danube holds Melk Abbey and a string of vineyard villages. The combined ÖBB Wachau-Ticket bundles train travel, abbey admission, and a Krems-Melk boat leg for a price that different sources put anywhere from €51 to €68, so it’s worth checking the current figure before booking rather than trusting one number. Eisenstadt and Neusiedler See
Eisenstadt, Burgenland’s capital, is about an hour away by train and centers on the Esterházy Palace, where Joseph Haydn worked for decades as court composer. Neusiedler See, a real lake nearby, sits 46 to 56km from Vienna depending on the road taken, not the roughly 30km sometimes quoted, and suits a half-day of walking or cycling along the shore. Salzburg, If You Have the Hours
The fastest Railjet Express connection runs about 2 hours 22 minutes each way; regular Railjet services take 2h31 to 2h53, and the separate Westbahn operator runs 2h28 to 2h38 from Westbahnhof. That’s a long day for a city with enough to fill two, so treat a Salzburg day trip as the rushed option and an overnight as the better one.
