A Day Out at Waitomo and Nearby

A day at Waitomo works best when one cave booking anchors the plan and everything else fits around it. Whether you start from Hamilton, Auckland or Rotorua, the drive decides how much room is left. Waitomo sits down State Highway 37, which leaves State Highway 3 near Hangatiki between Otorohanga and Te Kuiti. Distances and times below are approximate.

Choosing your starting point

From Hamilton: about 70 to 75 km, around an hour. This is the easiest base for a relaxed day with two stops.
From Auckland: about 190 to 200 km, which takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way. A day trip works, but one cave plus one other stop is realistic.
From Rotorua: about 150 km and roughly 2 hours.
From nearby towns: Te Kuiti is about 18 km (15 to 20 minutes) and Otorohanga about 20 km (20 to 25 minutes).

Without a car, InterCity runs from Auckland SkyCity on Hobson Street to the Waitomo Caves i-SITE in about 3 hours 40 minutes. Look at the return timetable before you build a day around it. InterCity also lists a combined Hobbiton and Waitomo day tour from Auckland or Rotorua at about $380 to $440. Hobbiton at Matamata is roughly 100 km from Waitomo, or about 1.5 hours by road, so do not try to fit both into a self-drive day.

The cave slot

Book the cave before anything else. The Glowworm Cave tour is 45 minutes and Ruakuri takes about 2 hours. The two together are sold as a combo from $179 for adults and $80 for children. Aim to be at check-in half an hour early. Ruakuri is about a 10-minute drive beyond the village. Prices are New Zealand dollars at 2026 rates and shift by season.

Add one nearby stop

Otorohanga Kiwi House is about 20 minutes from the village and opens 9am to 5pm daily, apart from 25 December. Adults (16 and over) pay $29.50, children aged 5 to 15 pay $13.50, under-5s are free and a family of 2 adults and 3 children pays $75. Keeper talks at 10:30am and 1:30pm are included in entry.

Te Anga Road runs west from Waitomo and holds the free stops. Piripiri Cave is about 28 to 29 km along, with a 5-minute walk, some steps and a need for a torch. Marokopa Falls, a 35 m drop, is 30 to 31 km along on a short easy track. Mangapohue Natural Bridge is about 25 km along, so look at the Department of Conservation page for its current status before you drive out.

When you have more time

Kawhia Ocean Beach has a hot water beach, a little over an hour away. Dig a pool in the sand within about 2 hours either side of low tide, and carry a spade.
Marokopa and Kiritehere Beach, about 45 minutes away, has fossil shell beds with Triassic clams, and the fossil platform is about 1 km from the car park.
Pureora Forest and the Timber Trail is an 85 km Great Ride from Pureora to Ongarue. It suits an overnight stay better than a detour.

Road conditions

Te Anga Road is narrow and winding, with a history of slips. A major flood in October 2025 closed roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, and caves and tours can be cancelled in high water, so read operator and council notices before you go. No fuel is sold west of Waitomo, so fill up at Otorohanga, Piopio or Te Kuiti.
