Auckland Fun for the Whole Family
Auckland packs an aquarium, a zoo, a transport museum, and a dormant volcano with lava caves into one metro area, which makes it one of the easier cities to keep kids entertained for a full week.

Penguins, sharks, and stingrays through underwater tunnels, with adult tickets from around NZD 39 booked online versus roughly NZD 47 at the gate, and child tickets (ages 3-15) from about NZD 27. MOTAT, and the tram ride nobody mentions
Adult NZD 19, child (5-15) NZD 10, and admission includes a heritage tram between MOTAT’s two sites and onward toward the zoo, an easy way to link two stops without paying for a taxi. MOTAT’s own site has the current exhibit lineup.
Auckland Zoo
Since 1 August 2026, pricing runs on a tiered resident/non-resident structure, with non-residents paying roughly 35% more than the resident flexible rate, so check Auckland Zoo’s current pricing rather than assuming a single number covers your whole family, or look at Auckland Zoo ticket options for a bundled rate.
Cornwall Park’s farm and playground
Free, with grazing sheep and cattle right beneath One Tree Hill and a playground for younger kids to burn off energy before or after the summit walk.
Rangitoto’s lava caves, packed properly
A genuine hit with kids once you’re there, flashlight in hand, but getting there means a roughly one-hour-each-way summit walk with no food, water, or shade sold anywhere on the island. Treat the walk as the main event, not a warm-up.
The beach question, answered honestly
Piha, Muriwai, and Karekare are not casual family swim spots outside the Labour Weekend to Easter lifeguard patrol season, and outside that window there are no flags up at all. Mission Bay and Long Bay are the gentle, genuinely safe swimming beaches on any date on the calendar.
Skip the full Coast to Coast Walkway or an interior Waitākere bush track as “family” content unless everyone in the group can handle a serious hike; Cornwall Park and the Domain are the real easy days.
