A full family day in Barcelona does not require a 90km trip to a theme park. Three stops inside the city, one of them completely free, cover a genuine day out without anyone needing a nap on a train home.

Barcelona’s science museum, in the Tibidabo-adjacent part of the city, charges roughly EUR 8 for general admission with under-16 entry free, a genuinely low-cost, hands-on-exhibits stop that works just as well on a gray afternoon as a sunny one. cosmocaixa.org has current opening hours and any temporary exhibitions running.
Barceloneta beach: the free option
Flat, easy to reach, with showers and facilities on hand and water calm enough for younger kids to actually swim in rather than just wade. Pairing a morning at the Aquarium with an afternoon here costs nothing extra beyond the Aquarium ticket itself, and needs no advance booking at all. Bring your own sun shade; the beach itself offers little natural cover, and rented umbrellas near the busiest stretch fill up fast on hot weekends.
Getting between the three stops
The Aquarium sits inside Port Vell, a short walk from Barceloneta beach itself, so this pairing needs no transit at all beyond the initial trip in. CosmoCaixa sits further out, near Tibidabo, and is better treated as its own separate outing on a different day than squeezed into the same afternoon as the other two.
What belongs to a bigger day, not this one
Tibidabo’s amusement park and PortAventura both deserve their own separate trip rather than a rushed add-on to an in-city day; PortAventura in particular sits roughly 90km away and eats most of a day in transit alone. Save either for a day when nothing else is on the schedule.
