Kid Friendly Black River Mauritius
Safety note, 31 October 2026: After curfews from 12 to 18 October, Mauritius reopened on 19 October with roads and schools running again. The UK says to avoid demonstrations, and the US asks visitors to take increased caution because of crime. Confirm your own government’s guidance before paying for anything.
Kid friendly Black River
Parents choose this part of Mauritius for sheltered water and short drives between sights. The guide below groups ideas into water, animals and wet weather, followed by a safety checklist. Costs are in Mauritian rupees (Rs) for non-residents.
Water
Flic-en-Flac lagoon. An offshore reef holds back the swell, leaving shallow, calm water by the sand. Casuarina trees shade the beach, and there are toilets, showers and vendors. Pack neoprene shoes, because sea urchins and sharp coral hide in the shallows. Because of bag theft in the resort, share the watching of your things.
Crystal Rock snorkelling. For older children, a lagoon trip to this coral outcrop offers clear water 1.5 to 2.5 m deep and little current. Pirogues licensed for the trip carry life jackets. The outing ends with lunch on Ile aux Benitiers.
Animals
Tortoise park at Chamarel. Entry comes with the geopark ticket, at Rs 800 for adults and Rs 400 for ages 5 to 11 (under-5s free). Aldabra tortoises, some of them very old, wander an open enclosure.
Casela. The park at Cascavelle is open from 09:00 to 17:00 daily apart from 25 December and 1 January. A safari bus drives past zebras, ostriches and rhinos, and the aviary lets families walk among birds. The Tulawaka toboggan is 760 m long, and each ride has its own age and height rule that you should confirm when booking. Non-resident entry starts around Rs 1,300 to 1,600 for adults. The big-cat experiences are best skipped.
Wet weather
Curious Corner of Chamarel sits across from the geopark gate and is built around illusions, a mirror maze and an upside-down house. Ebony Forest runs a two hour jeep tour at Rs 1,080 for ages 5 to 17 (under-5s free), including a short walk on raised walkways.
Safety checklist
- Keep everyone on the boardwalks at the geopark, since the dunes are off limits and the waterfall base is closed to swimmers.
- Explain that monkeys at the lookouts are wild and must never be fed.
- Stay out of gorge streams after rain.
- Pack water, hats and sunscreen, and do the outdoor activities in the morning.
- In cyclone season, from November to May, follow the rule that nobody leaves the accommodation during a storm.
