Göreme Outings Children Enjoy
Sorted by effort
Instead of a list by popularity, here are the outings ranked from easiest to hardest for small legs. Each note flags what to watch.
1. Balloon watching (no effort)
Balloons rise at dawn over the valleys, and a hilltop gives a free view with no flight required. Take layers and treat it as a short morning outing. If a flight is on your wish list, ask the operator whether it has age or height limits, and remember that flights are cancelled when the wind is wrong.
2. Devrent Valley (little effort)
The fairy chimneys of Devrent resemble animals, which turns the walk into a spotting game. The valley lies near Ürgüp, off the Avanos road. Keep children on the paths and off the rock.
3. Avanos pottery (little effort)
Avanos is a river town on the Kızılırmak, known for pottery. Studios show wheel work, and children tend to like watching clay turn into a bowl. Check times first, as hours vary. Press reports from 2020 to 2022 mention 15-minute gondola rides on the river, so ask whether they operate now.
4. Göreme Open-Air Museum (some effort)
The museum is roughly 1.5 km from the village. Steps are uneven and the interiors are dark, so it suits school-age children more than toddlers. No flash, no touching the paintings. It opens daily at 08:00, closes at 17:45 and stops selling tickets at 17:15 according to the museum page .
5. Kaymaklı Underground City (most effort)
Four of its 8 levels are open, with low, narrow passages. Very young children and anyone claustrophobic should stay out. Let older children opt in, and keep the family together on the lit path.
Safety at every stop
The rock is tuff, soft and crumbly. Trails loosen underfoot, and edges drop sharply in places. Agree one rule before you start: nobody climbs on the fairy chimneys or goes into the carved dovecotes. Carry water and sunscreen, since summer can be hot.
Planning
Because children tire quickly, put the hard outing early in the day and the easy one after lunch. Keep a spare morning in the schedule too, since a balloon-watching plan can slip if the wind is wrong.
Pair one big outing with one easy one, and leave time for rest. A free morning of balloon watching followed by pottery in Avanos makes a gentle day. Check the UK government travel advice before you travel, and look for tours on GetYourGuide .
