Klaipeda Itinerary for Parents and Kids
Planning Klaipėda with children is easiest by weather. The city has one good wet-weather anchor, a handful of dry-weather outings, and a short beach season. Prices are 2026 amounts in euros.
Safety first
The Baltic is cold and the harbour is busy. Keep children away from the harbour breakwater, the Northern Pier boulders and the shipping strait. At the beach, choose a place with a lifeguard on duty, obey the flags and leave the water when a storm is coming. Sea temperatures average about 13 degrees C in June and about 16 degrees C in July, so July and August are the realistic swimming weeks. Smiltynė and Melnragė are the sandy beaches families use.
If it rains: the Sea Museum
The Lithuanian Sea Museum fills a half day under cover. Its aquarium, seal enclosures and Baltic exhibitions sit in an old fort at Smiltynės g. 3 on the Curonian Spit. The crossing from E. Galvanausko bul. 1 costs EUR 1.70 return for a foot passenger and lasts about 5 to 7 minutes. The fort is 1.6 km from the landing, which a mini train covers for a fee. Entry is EUR 10 for adults between October and April and EUR 14 between May and September, with school students at EUR 5 or EUR 7 and pre-schoolers free. Nobody pays on the last Sunday of the month. A Baltic Sea animal rehabilitation centre also runs tours, but they need an email booking beforehand. Dogs and other pets stay outside.
Dolphin and sea lion presentations are on the museum’s programme, and an adult ticket is EUR 12 in winter and EUR 18 in summer. From October to March the museum opens only from Friday to Sunday, so check the museum calendar .
If it is dry: Dino Park and the forest
Dino Park, Pušyno g. 9, Radailiai, lies about 7 km east of the centre and has animatronic dinosaurs among the trees. The base ticket is about EUR 10, and the Upside-Down House costs a few euros more. It runs from about 1 April to 31 October. Listed opening hours disagree, so confirm them before you drive out.
Over on the spit, the Hill of Witches is a free forest path in Juodkrantė, lined with about 80 wooden witches, devils and folk characters. Juodkrantė is a stop on the Nida bus, which costs EUR 8.00 per person.
Any weather: ships and statues
Sūduvis, a retired German-built minehunter, is moored on the Danė beside the Castle Bridge. Adults pay EUR 6 and reduced fares are EUR 3. Because of narrow ladders and steep steps, it does not suit small children or pushchairs.
The Old Town has small bronze sculptures along its lanes, and finding them makes a free game.
Ferry fares for families
Bicycles travel free with a passenger ticket, so a family on bikes pays only the passenger fares. The tariff for passengers, bikes and cars is on the ferry price list .
