Family Activities in Runaway Bay
Ask a Runaway Bay taxi driver about the Jewel Lagoon Water Park and you will get pointed at a fenced construction site. Sandals bought the whole Jewel Runaway Bay property in 2020 and closed it for redevelopment into Beaches Runaway Bay, still unfinished in 2026; any list still recommending the water park is working from outdated information.
What actually works for families here is less flashy and arguably better. Franklyn D. Resort & Spa builds every family booking around a dedicated, professionally trained “Vacation Nanny,” included at no extra cost from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily. The nanny handles childcare, pool and beach supervision, and excursion logistics, a genuinely different model from a kids’ club that only opens for scheduled sessions. FDR also runs a junior scuba certification program through its on-site dive center for older kids and teens.
Green Grotto Caves works for children from about age 4 up: hard hats and headlamps are handed out for the 45 to 60 minute guided walk, and the payoff is real rather than staged, roosting bats, stalactite chambers, and the underground Grotto Lake used in the 1973 Bond film Live and Let Die. The walk down to the lake involves roughly 65 steps, so factor that into stroller and carrier logistics; there is no lift.
Cardiff Hall Beach, known locally as Flavours Beach, is the easiest family beach day in town: shallow, reef-calmed water, soft sand, shade from almond trees, and food on-site, with no admission fee. For something more active than a beach day, River Rapids Jamaica runs family-suitable river tubing on the Rio Bueno, gentle Class I rapids rated for children aged 5 and up with a guide, life jackets mandatory. Book the Rio Bueno family tubing trip if a full water park substitute is what you are actually after.
Ten minutes west in Discovery Bay, Puerto Seco Beach Park is the closer thing to a water park that Runaway Bay families actually have: a gated beach club with a freshwater pool, a floating Wibit inflatable obstacle course, loungers, cabanas, and a restaurant, open 8:30 AM to 5 PM daily for about US$20 per adult and US$10 per child.
Verdict: if the trip hinges on hands-off childcare, book FDR over a generic all-inclusive; the nanny program is the actual differentiator, not the pool size.
