Bangkok Multi-Day Trips Worth a Night

Chiang Mai
About 700km north, a genuinely different mountain and old-city region, never a Bangkok day trip under any transport mode. The overnight sleeper (Train #9, departs 18:40, arrives roughly 07:15, about 12 hours 35 minutes) runs roughly 940-1,200 THB for a 2nd-class berth; a daytime train (#7, 08:30-19:30, about 11 hours) also runs, and bus is the slowest, cheapest option at 9-10 hours. Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Direct flights run about 1 hour 20 minutes on multiple carriers, dozens of weekly departures from Suvarnabhumi. The temple complex alone rewards at least two full days, so this only works as a multi-night add-on, never a single-day one. Kanchanaburi, upgraded to an overnight
Covered as a day trip on our other guide, but travelers who actually want to absorb the WWII history, the museums, both war cemeteries, and Hellfire Pass 80km further west, do markedly better with a night in town than a rushed same-day round trip. Search Kanchanaburi accommodation on Booking.com ; book river-view rooms ahead in the November-February peak season.
Khao Yai National Park, upgraded to an overnight
About 150km northeast, roughly 2.5-3 hours by drive. A UNESCO World Heritage forest complex with wild elephants, gibbons, hornbills and waterfalls; Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Khao Yai listing covers seasonal access notes. The drive alone eats 5-6 hours round trip on a single-day tour, leaving a thin window for wildlife that is never guaranteed anyway. Krabi and Phuket, the Andaman coast
Direct flights run roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes, dozens of weekly services on the Krabi route alone. Thailand’s marquee beach region, limestone karsts, Railay Beach, and island-hopping around Krabi, or Phuket’s larger resort and nightlife scale, firmly needs several nights, not a comfortable overnight and certainly not a day trip. Pattaya, covered in our day trips guide, is the closer, genuinely day-trippable beach option; save the Andaman coast for when you actually have the nights to spend.
Every destination here needs at least one overnight, Krabi and Phuket realistically several; same-day feasibility for Chiang Mai, Siem Reap or the Andaman coast belongs nowhere in this list.
