Nights Away from Cartagena by Distance

Travel advisory: At the time of writing, the US State Department’s rating for Colombia is Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, issued on 31 March 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to specified border and rural regions, including the southern part of Bolívar Department, and Cartagena is not on its list. In Cartagena itself, guard against street theft, spiked drinks and unlicensed taxis.

Cartagena works far better as a base for day outings than as a starting point for long tours, and the overnight options are limited and mostly self-arranged. This page lays them out by travel time, says what is known and what keeps changing, and sends you to the official sources for anything that depends on closures or timetables. Conversions assume about 3,200 COP per US$1, a rate that shifts daily.

Distance ladder

Barú or the Rosario Islands: a boat or about 1 hour by road, then a night on the spot.
Palenque: about 50 km south-east, roughly 1.5 hours by road.
Santa Marta: about 4 to 5 hours by bus, with Tayrona National Park beyond it.
Mompox: about 6 to 6.5 hours by road.

The nearest night: Barú and the islands

A night away avoids the early rush for boats at Muelle de la Bodeguita and gives you the quiet hours on the beach. The aviary’s visitor page lists places to stay along the Barú road, among them Hotel Playa Manglares, Decameron Barú, Isla del Encanto, Sofitel Barú Calablanca, Sabai, Aura Barú and Hotel Las Islas. Boat trips to the islands carry the usual cash charges: a pier-use fee (roughly 18,000 to 34,000 COP), park entry of 13,500 COP in the Rosario sector and the compulsory accident insurance, reported at about 8,800 COP. The December to March trade winds can cancel crossings, and the port captaincy’s sea flags have the final word.

Santa Marta and Tayrona

Count on at least two nights for this trip, never a day. Buses to Santa Marta take about 4 to 5 hours, with fares from about 57,000 COP, and the park is a further journey past the city.

Tayrona can close at short notice for security reasons, and it shuts for “Respira Tayrona” rest periods three times a year, usually around early February, early June and late October into November. Foreign non-resident entry is reported at roughly 81,000 COP in low season to 96,500 COP in high season, and sources disagree. The compulsory accident insurance applies here as well. Read the national parks notice and confirm dates before you book transport.

Mompox

The colonial river town of Mompox is about 6 to 6.5 hours from Cartagena by road. Reports mention roughly three direct buses daily, which makes one night the minimum; confirm times at the terminal.

Palenque overnight

San Basilio de Palenque is a community-run destination, and visits are arranged through local associations such as Benkos Tour. Some travellers pair it with the Totumo mud volcano. Whether a night in the village is possible is something to ask the association directly.

Before you book

Keep two or three nights in Cartagena itself, then move on.
