Planning 3 to 5 Days in Dresden

Dresden does not have organised multi-day tours of its own to describe. What it offers is a good base: a compact old town, a second district across the river, and rail-served excursions in every direction. This page gives a 3 to 5 day outline, and the day-by-day plans live on the itinerary pages linked at the end.

The pieces of a stay

Altstadt, one day or more. The core sights are the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Residenzschloss and the Semperoper, all within a flat 2.5 km walk. Reserve the Historic Green Vault timed slot early, since it is always sold separately from other SKD tickets.

Neustadt and the river, one day. Cross to the north bank for the Kunsthofpassage in the Äußere Neustadt, then add the Loschwitz cable railways. Paddle steamers run only when the Elbe is high enough, so keep that part of the day flexible.

Saxon Switzerland, one day. The S1 reaches Kurort Rathen for the Bastei Bridge, or goes on to Königstein for the fortress. Trail closures after the July 2026 storm remain in force in places, so read saechsische-schweiz.de before you commit.

Meissen with Moritzburg, one or two days. The S1 reaches Meissen in about 38 minutes. Moritzburg needs the S1 to Radebeul Ost and then the Lößnitzgrundbahn steam railway, and the palace is closed from 2 to 19 November 2026.

Leipzig (about 65 to 90 minutes) and Prague (about 2 hours) are separate trips and do not fit as casual add-ons.

Passes over several days

  • SKD day tickets: 28 EUR for one day and 32 EUR for two days, covering all SKD museums except the Historic Green Vault and timed special exhibitions.
  • MuseumsCard Dresden: valid for 2 days, with free entry to about 27 museums. It excludes public transport and the Historic Green Vault.
  • Dresden City Card: Dresden-zone public transport plus discounts, with no free museum entry. The 2025 flyer listed 17.50, 25 and 34.50 EUR for 1, 2 or 3 days, so check the current price.
  • Public transport: the DVB day ticket is 9.50 EUR. The Deutschlandticket costs 63 EUR a month.

What changes by season

  • The Hausmannsturm tower opens only from late March to 2 November.
  • The Frauenkirche dome closes at 16:00 from November to February.
  • The Parkeisenbahn and the Pillnitz park run from spring to the end of October or early November.
  • The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt runs from 25 November to 24 December in 2026 and is free to enter.
  • On 13 February the city marks the anniversary of the 1945 bombing. Remembrance events and demonstrations take place around that date, and normal visits are not affected.
