Beyond Kyoto: Hiroshima and Kanazawa
Nara, Osaka, Uji and Himeji are day trips from Kyoto and covered as such elsewhere on this site. Hiroshima and Kanazawa are a different category entirely: both are fast enough to tempt a rushed single day, and both reward the extra night instead.
Hiroshima and Miyajima
A direct Shinkansen covers the distance in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, fast enough that plenty of visitors are tempted to squeeze it into a single day from Kyoto. Resist that. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum ask for unhurried time, not a rushed hour between trains, and a proper Miyajima visit, the “floating” torii gate and Itsukushima Shrine included, needs the tide timed right and an evening on the island to see the gate lit after the day-trip crowds leave on the last ferry. Treat this as a 2-night minimum rather than a compressed day.
Kanazawa
Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension reached Tsuruga in March 2024, Kanazawa is now about 2 hours from Kyoto: a Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga, roughly 45 minutes, connecting to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for about another hour. Kenroku-en, ranked among Japan’s three great gardens, a well-preserved Edo-era samurai and geisha district, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art add up to a genuine 2 to 3 night stay rather than a day trip bolted onto a Kyoto itinerary. The transfer at Tsuruga adds a change of platform rather than a change of ticket type in most cases, so build in a buffer for the connection on a first trip rather than cutting it tight between train arrivals.
What this section deliberately doesn’t do
It doesn’t pitch either destination as day-trip-feasible under any transport combination; that framing belongs to Nara, Osaka, Uji and Himeji, covered in this site’s Kyoto day trips guide instead. And it doesn’t hand you a specific booking link for either train route: no single stable official page for current Thunderbird or Shinkansen fares and schedules could be confirmed this pass, so check JR West’s own site directly before you commit to a departure time.
Book lodging for both legs before the trip rather than on arrival, since neither city is a place you want to be hunting for a room after dark.
