Multi-Day Journeys Beyond Nouakchott
Advisory, October 2026: Mauritania is Level 3, Reconsider Travel, for the US, which also lists Level 4 military zones. The UK FCDO warns against all travel in the east and near the Mali border and against all but essential travel across much of the interior, including parts of Adrar and Tagant. Insurance can be void if you travel against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO warnings again before you commit.
Four routes dominate Mauritanian travel plans. They differ a lot in how much risk they carry, so this page compares them side by side before describing each one.

Banc d’Arguin
On this coastal UNESCO reserve, wooden sailing boats called lanches carry visitors across shallow banks where pelicans, flamingos and terns gather. Iwik and Téssot are villages used as bases. Pay the entry fee at the park offices, ask about the permit for offshore islands, and book a guide who knows the tides. Rooms are simple, in camps or community guesthouses, and mobile coverage often disappears. Travel between October and March.
Diawling
Diawling sits roughly 220 km south, close to the Diama dam and the Senegal River estuary. This Ramsar wetland shelters warthogs, patas monkeys, monitor lizards and over 200 kinds of waterbird. The pavement ends at Keur Macène, and beyond it a rough piste demands a 4x4. The park’s own site is pnd.mr .
The Adrar
The route climbs through Akjoujt to Atar, some 435 km on the paved N1, then reaches the Terjit oasis with its date palms and springs, the 13th-century ksar of Chinguetti with its stone minaret and manuscripts, and the cliff-top ruins of Ouadane. Atar, Chinguetti and Ouadane sit in the zone the FCDO leaves out of its warning, and Al Jazeera’s June 2026 report describes visitors returning. Because closures can change at short notice, and Canada urges avoiding all travel east of the Zouerat, Ouadane, Tidjikja and Kiffa line, you should check advice in the week you go. No plan is offered here for the Richat Structure, which lies east of Ouadane in an advised-against area.
The iron ore railway
The SNIM line hauls ore 704 km between Zouerat and Nouadhibou. A second-class passenger ticket was about 300 MRU in 2025, according to Wikivoyage. Foreign visitors are formally barred from riding the ore wagons, with uneven enforcement, and the track runs near the Western Sahara border where landmines and FCDO advice apply. The corridor is therefore not recommended in this guide.
