Planning a Longer Stay Around Lake Ohrid
A longer stay in Ohrid works best with one base, a short list of outings and a realistic idea of what the region offers. Two or three days in the town itself is a comfortable length. Four days stretches it with extra outings. Fares and fees are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro.
Arriving
The airport, code OHD, lies roughly 9 to 10 km from the Old Town. Coming from Skopje by bus, expect around 3 hours over about 170 km, at roughly 460 to 490 MKD one way. The operators listed on aggregator sites include Galeb, Delfina Tours and Classic Company, and they do not all depart from the same stations, so confirm yours.
The core of the stay
Two or three days in Ohrid covers the main sights without rushing. Use one day for the Old Town on foot, one day for the lake boat to the Bay of Bones and St Naum, and spare time for the beach, a pearl shop or a tandem flight from the Galicica ridge. Samuel’s Fortress closes around 16:00 to 17:00 in autumn, and many sites keep shorter hours from October to March.
Add-ons by direction
North: Struga and Vevcani. Struga is about 14 km northwest of Ohrid, and Vevcani lies about 14 km from Struga. Vevcani holds a carnival on 13 and 14 January.
East and over the ridge: Prespa and Bitola. Galicica National Park has a road that crosses between the lakes. Continue from the Prespa side towards Bitola and the ancient site of Heraclea Lyncestis for a three or four day loop.
South: Albania. The border at St Naum opens onto Pogradec. Take your passport and check the entry requirements for your nationality in advance.
By bus: Skopje. Pair Skopje and Ohrid across three days, with a night in each city and the bus between them.
How long to stay
Ohrid itself fits two to three days comfortably, so any longer plan leans on the add-ons above, such as Albania or Bitola.
Safety and conditions
The US State Department rates North Macedonia at Level 1, exercise normal precautions. The lake is warm enough to swim from about late June to mid-September, and free beaches have no dependable lifeguard. Sailing Stone Travel lists the boat schedule to St Naum.
