Panama City Overnights by Road, Boat, Air

How you leave Panama City decides how the trip feels. A 4x4 climbs a mountain road before dawn, a ferry slides across the bay in half an hour, and a small plane reaches the highlands in under an hour. Sort the overnight options by vehicle and the trade-offs are clear.

By road: Guna Yala and the Caribbean coast

Guna Yala, known as San Blas, begins with a pickup near 05:00 and a 2.5 to 3 hour 4x4 ride to Carti, then a boat to a cabana island. Cabins are simple, with hammocks and seafood. Bring cash only, and your passport. Entry tax runs about $20 to $22 plus a port fee of $2 to $5. A one-night stay turns an exhausting 14 hour day tour into a proper trip.

Portobelo and Fort San Lorenzo lie 1.5 to 2 hours by road on the Caribbean side. An overnight lets you see coral-stone forts, the Black Christ in Iglesia San Felipe and, if you wish, the Agua Clara locks ($10 adult, $5 child, daily 08:00 to 17:00). Colón city centre is not a place to wander on foot, so keep to the sights and your driver.

By boat: Isla Taboga

Taboga Express leaves from Fuerte Amador, takes 30 minutes and costs $24 per adult return; carry ID or a passport. Staying the night gives you the island after the last ferry leaves. Streets are car-free, the Iglesia de San Pedro dates from 1524, and Playa Restinga is the swimming beach. Reserve through Taboga Express .

By air: Boquete and Bocas del Toro

Flights to David (for Boquete) and to Isla Colón (for Bocas del Toro) take about 50 minutes each. Both leave from Albrook airport (PAC), not Tocumen (PTY), so check which airport your ticket names. Boquete is a highland coffee base, which pairs naturally with Geisha coffee tastings; Bocas is an island archipelago.   • Pack a dry bag for boat rides and a light rain jacket.

Which one first
