Prague Multi-Day Trips: Krumlov to Dresden

Prague sits close enough to three other national capitals that skipping an overnight add-on is arguably wasting the location. None of what follows works crammed into a single day, and pretending otherwise is how a trip ends up rushed.
Český Krumlov, as an overnight
The travel math argues against a single day, 5-plus hours round trip. Stay the night instead: the castle’s four separate routes, Route 1 at CZK 300, Route 2 at CZK 260, a Museum and Tower combo at CZK 280, and an exclusive Baroque Theatre tour at CZK 400, are genuinely varied enough to fill two relaxed days, and the town itself changes character once the day-tour buses clear out by evening.
Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland
Pravčická brána, Europe’s largest natural sandstone arch, is roughly 2-2.5 hours each way by car, and meaningfully slower and more connection-dependent by public transport, a train to Děčín followed by a local bus to Hřensko. Attempting it independently as a single day realistically means 10-12 hours door to door, which argues strongly for an overnight in Děčín or Hřensko instead.
Dresden, Germany
Direct trains run roughly 2 hours, with fares from around €8, making Dresden a genuinely fast, cheap overnight or even a very long day extension of a Prague stay.
Vienna, Austria
Direct trains run roughly 4 hours, fares from around €16, a different imperial-capital register from Prague entirely, and an easy 2-3 night add-on.
Budapest, Hungary
Direct trains run roughly 6.5-7 hours via Brno or Bratislava, or with a change in Vienna, a firmly multi-night commitment, the classic third leg of the Prague-Vienna-Budapest rail loop this route repeatedly comes up in.
Berlin, Germany
Direct trains run roughly 4-4.5 hours, a further genuine multi-night option distinct from the closer Dresden trip.

Verdict: Dresden is the easiest single add-on at 2 hours each way if time is short, while Krumlov rewards committing to a full overnight rather than a rushed pass-through.
