A Longer San Francisco Adventure
Give San Francisco more than a couple of days and it stops being a checklist trip and starts letting you build in a real regional loop. Five days is the sweet spot: enough time in the city itself, plus a couple of nights outside it.
Spend the first two days in the city proper. Book Alcatraz early, since Alcatraz City Cruises sells out 3 to 6 weeks ahead in summer; the Day Tour runs $47.95 and includes the audio tour through the cellhouse. Ride the Powell-Hyde cable car over Nob Hill ($9 a ride through early January 2027), wander Chinatown through the Dragon Gate at Grant and Bush, and walk or bike the Golden Gate Bridge itself, which is free in both directions even though the vehicle toll runs $10.25 to $10.50 southbound.
Day three, rent a car and head to Muir Woods and Sausalito, 12 miles north. This is the one leg of the trip where planning ahead is non-negotiable: every visitor by car or shuttle needs a pre-paid, timed reservation at gomuirwoods.com , since nothing is sold on site and there’s no cell signal once you arrive. Parking runs $10, or take the $3.75-$4.00 shuttle from Larkspur. Walk the redwood grove in the morning, then have lunch on Sausalito’s waterfront before heading back.
Day four, push north into Napa or Sonoma wine country, 50 to 65 miles away. Napa’s Highway 29 corridor is the grand, expensive version, with tasting fees running $40 to over $100 a winery; Sonoma is looser and cheaper. Either way it’s worth overnighting rather than doing the round trip in a day, which is why this belongs on a multi-day itinerary rather than squeezed into a single afternoon.
If wine isn’t the draw, swap that day for Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea instead, about 2 to 2.5 hours south. The Monterey Bay Aquarium ($65-$70 adult) is worth the drive on its own, and Carmel’s cottage-lined streets make a good overnight stop before looping back to the city.
Day five, ease back into San Francisco itself: Lands End’s coastal trail, the free 9th-floor Hamon Tower at the de Young Museum, or a last cable car ride before you fly out.
