Chiang Mai Day Trips Worth the Drive
Get the distances right before you commit to a day trip here, because two of the province’s most famous names are not day trips at all. Pai is 3.5 to 4 hours of switchbacks each way, and the Mae Hong Son Loop is a 600-km, 1,864-curve road trip that needs 4 to 5 days minimum. Both deserve an overnight, not a rushed there-and-back. Here is what actually fits in a single day.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Thailand’s highest peak at 2,565 meters, 100 km southwest along Highway 108 and 1009, about 2 hours each way. Thailand’s roof, Twin Royal Pagodas, Wachirathan and Mae Ya waterfalls, and the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest trail if it is open (November 1 to May 31 only). Pack a warm layer; the summit runs 15C colder than the city and can flirt with freezing on winter mornings. Park entry is set by the Department of National Parks at 300 THB foreign adult, 150 THB child, plus 30 THB per car. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls and Sri Lanna
60 km north on Highway 1001, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Climb the mineral limestone tiers barefoot, no rope needed, and swim in the spring-fed pools beneath. Free entry, open 08:00 to 17:00. This combines cleanly with Mae Taeng rafting or a stop at Wat Ban Den on the way back.
Chiang Dao district
75 km north on Highway 107, roughly 1.5 hours. Doi Luang Chiang Dao’s limestone massif, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, holds a 12-km cave system : the outer lit chambers with Burmese-style Buddhas cost 40 THB, and a local guide with a kerosene lantern leads small groups into the unlit deeper caverns for 100 to 200 THB per group. Mae Kampong highland village
50 km east into Mae On district via Route 1317, about 1 hour 15 minutes. A century-old teakwood mountain village set in tea and coffee forest, with stream-side cafes and a waterfall walk. Go on a weekday; the narrow mountain road backs up badly with weekend traffic.
Chiang Rai’s White Temple, as a long day
185 km, 3.5 hours each way on Highway 118, a genuinely demanding 12- to 14-hour round trip. Wat Rong Khun (100 THB foreign admission), the Blue Temple, and Baan Dam’s Black House make it worthwhile, but if your schedule allows it, sleeping in Chiang Rai and driving back the next day beats the marathon single-day version.
The verdict
