Chiang Mai Road Trips: 3 Days to 5
Two multi-day routes actually earn a spot on the itinerary here, and they are built for very different travelers. One stays close to the city and covers the province’s headline sights properly; the other is a full mountain road expedition that eats the better part of a week.
3 days: Old City, elephants, and the roof of Thailand
Day one is the walking-tour version of the Old City: Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Phra Singh in the morning, then up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep for the golden chedi and sunset over the valley. Evening belongs to whichever Walking Street lines up with your dates, Saturday on Wua Lai Road or Sunday on Ratchadamnoen Road. Day two is Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng, an observation-only sanctuary where rescued elephants roam in family herds and you watch from raised skywalks and river banks, no riding, no bathing, ever. A day visit runs 2,500 to 3,500 THB with transfer and a plant-based buffet; book weeks ahead in the November to February high season. Stop at Bo Sang Umbrella Making Centre on the way back for a paper-painting session. Day three is Doi Inthanon National Park in full: the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest trail if it is open, the Twin Royal Pagodas, Wachirathan Waterfall, and Karen drip coffee in Mae Klang Luang village. Book the Doi Inthanon day on Viator to lock in the third day before the park’s dual-pricing gates get busy.
5 days: the Mae Hong Son Loop
This is 600 km and 1,864 curves, and it genuinely needs the full five days; trying to compress it is how people end up driving mountain switchbacks after dark. Day one runs Chiang Mai to Pai on Highway 1095, 762 curves and 3.5 hours, with Pai Canyon at sunset. Day two continues to Mae Hong Son town via Tham Lod cave, where a bamboo raft carries you through the cavern, ending at Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu for sunset over the valley. Day three heads to Mae Sariang via Khun Yuam, past quiet riverside Shan-style wooden temples. Day four turns back toward Doi Inthanon on Highway 108, overnighting at a mountain lodge; check rates near Doi Inthanon on Agoda a few weeks out, since rooms near the park gate are limited. Day five is the summit itself before the drive back into Chiang Mai, where the Department of National Parks sets the 300 THB foreign adult gate fee. A standard car license does not cover a motorbike here; you need a home motorcycle license plus an International Driving Permit with the Category A endorsement, checked at roadside stops in Mae Rim and around the Old City moat, or hire a driver instead.
The verdict
Pick the 3-day route if this is your only stretch in Northern Thailand and you want the essentials done well. Pick the 5-day loop only if mountain driving itself is part of the appeal, not a means to an end; it is a driving trip first and a sightseeing trip second.
