Go Big: Multi-Day Trips From Chiang Mai
Some of Chiang Mai’s best territory simply won’t compress into a day trip, and trying to force it just means hours in a van for a photo stop. These three routes are built to be slept on, not rushed through.
The Mae Hong Son Loop
This is one of Southeast Asia’s legendary road trips: 600km round-trip on Routes 108 and 1095, threading through 1,864 hairpin bends across mist-covered limestone peaks. Budget 3-5 days. Stop in Pai for two nights (Pai Canyon, hot springs, the night market), detour through Tham Lod Cave for bamboo rafting past bat colonies, and pass through Mae Hong Son town itself for the Burmese-style Wat Chong Kham on the lake and hilltop Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu. The final stretch runs through Ban Rak Thai, a Chinese Kuomintang tea-farming village worth a slow afternoon. Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle
A gentler 2-3 day version of the north. Day one covers Chiang Rai’s temple trio: the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun, 100 THB), the Blue Temple (free), and the Black House museum (80 THB), finishing at the night bazaar food court. Day two pushes to Chiang Saen on the Mekong, where the Hall of Opium Museum (200 THB) lays out the history and human cost of the region’s drug trade in genuinely striking detail, before you view the Golden Triangle tri-point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Chiang Dao’s wilderness

Spend two days, one night: explore the vast chambers of Tham Chiang Dao Cave (40 THB entrance, plus 150 THB for a lantern guide into the deeper sections), soak in rustic natural hot springs, and stay in a bamboo homestay looking out over the rice valley below.

None of the three need to be combined; each one earns a dedicated trip on its own.
