Sarajevo Stays of 3 to 5 Days

A stay of several days around Sarajevo comes down to one choice: do you sleep in the city and take short outings, or move south toward Herzegovina and the coast? Sarajevo is a better base than a hub, because the mountain roads make every trip slow. This page sets out three ways to spend three to five days, with prices in convertible marks (BAM).

Option 1: three days in the city

Three days cover the main sights without hurrying.

Day 1, the old town. Start at the Sebilj fountain in Baščaršija and have a Bosnian coffee for about 3 to 4 BAM. The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque admits visitors for 3 BAM, with an English-speaking guide included. From 1 April to 31 October the interior opens 09:00 to 12:00, 14:30 to 16:00 and 17:30 to 19:00, and from 31 October to 1 April only 09:00 to 11:00. It is a working mosque, so it is closed at prayer times, modest dress is expected, and a phone call ahead is recommended. Walk Ferhadija to the Sacred Heart Cathedral, then to the Vijećnica, open daily 09:00 to 17:00 at about 10 BAM. End at the Yellow Fortress for the view at dusk.

Day 2, the mountain and the museums. Take the Trebević cable car (20 BAM return, 15 BAM one-way) and keep to the paved paths at the top, because mines from the 1990s remain in the hills and woods. Never enter abandoned buildings. Later, choose the National Museum (about 20 BAM, closed Mondays) or the War Childhood Museum (15 BAM, daily 11:00 to 19:00). The Tunnel Museum at Butmir, about 20 BAM and cash only, takes half a day on its own, and both it and Galerija 11/07/95 are memorials to be visited quietly.

Day 3, Mostar. The train leaves at about 07:15 and takes roughly 2 hours. Confirm the return and the running days at zfbh.ba , and keep the bus in mind as an alternative.

Option 2: Sarajevo, Konjic and Mostar

This route moves south and turns the trip into a line rather than a circle. Spend two nights in Sarajevo, then continue to Konjic, about 50 km away. Tito’s ARK D-0 bunker is open to guided visits only, booked in advance, with about 90 minutes inside. Neretva rafting runs from May to October at around 41 to 75 euros per person. Sleep in Konjic or carry on to Mostar by train or bus, where the Old Bridge and the bazaar lanes reward an evening rather than a rush. Dubrovnik and Split can be reached by onward bus from Mostar, but they are long journeys, so ask the operator for current times.

Option 3: Sarajevo plus a remembrance day

Srebrenica-Potočari is 120 to 135 km away, and the drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way. It is best planned as its own day of remembrance, placed away from busier days. Entry is free, and guided tours have been reported at about 120 BAM. It is not a trip for small children.

Winter: mountains and air quality

From November to February the valley floor can fill with smog, and anyone with breathing difficulties may prefer to sleep higher up. Bjelašnica sells day passes at about 59 BAM for adults, and Jahorina, on the Republika Srpska side, at 73 to 86 BAM, based on the 2025/26 season. Check current price lists before you book.

Where to sleep

The area around Baščaršija is the easiest base on foot, and tram line 3 serves the rest of the valley as far as Ilidža. A search such as Sarajevo stays for several nights shows what is open for your dates.
