Sarajevo can be explored on foot without a guide, and the routes below are sorted by effort so you can pick one to match your legs and the weather. The valley floor is flat and the neighbourhoods on either side are steep. Wear shoes with grip, because the cobbles are slippery when wet, and keep some cash for coffee stops, since small places often do not take cards. Tram line 3 runs along the valley if you need a lift back.

The sights of Sarajevo line up almost like a timeline. Walk west along the river and you pass from the Ottoman market of the fifteenth century to the Habsburg streets of the late nineteenth, and then to the Olympic mountain of 1984. The central sights sit within about two kilometres of each other, so the order below is also a sensible walking order. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM), and a few desks accept cash only.

This page is laid out as a weekend for two, with prices in convertible marks (BAM), tied to the euro at roughly 1.96 BAM per euro. A stay of several days around Sarajevo comes down to one choice: do you sleep in the city and take short outings, or move south toward Herzegovina and the coast? Sarajevo is a better base than a hub, because the mountain roads make every trip slow. This page sets out three ways to spend three to five days, with prices in convertible marks (BAM). Option 1: three days in the city Three days cover the main sights without hurrying.

Sarajevo is a city for walking and looking more than for play parks, so a family visit here is built from a few short outings rather than a full programme. The options are a cable car, a flat spring park, a small zoo, a mountain coaster and a few museums for bad weather. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM), and some desks take only cash. Plan for one main outing a day and keep the rest loose.

Sarajevo is not a day-trip hub. Mountains close in on every side, the rail network is thin, and most journeys follow a single road or rail line, so a short list of outings is more useful than a long one. Below they are ordered by how long the journey takes, from the quickest to the longest. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM), and anything marked as unconfirmed should be checked with the operator before you commit a day to it.

Between 5 April 1992 and 29 February 1996 Sarajevo lived through the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare, and much of what the city now shows visitors is shaped by it. This page groups the museums and memorials by where they are and how long they take, so you can plan a day without rushing through places that deserve quiet. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM). Several ticket desks take cash only, so carry notes.

Most visitors give Sarajevo two to four days, and the city is easiest to enjoy when each part of the day has one job. Mornings suit the old bazaar before the lanes fill, afternoons suit museums or a trip up the mountain, and evenings belong to the hillside viewpoints and the dinner tables. Prices below are in convertible marks (BAM, also written KM), tied to the euro at roughly 1.96 BAM per euro.
