Sri Lanka Trips: First Visit or Return
Most visitors repeat the same loop, so the best multi-day plan depends on whether it is your first Sri Lanka trip or your second.
First visit: the classic loop
Use a car and driver for this route. Day rates are typically LKR 18,000 to 30,000, and the roads are slow.
- Colombo or Negombo. Land and rest.
- Cultural Triangle, 2 to 3 nights. Sigiriya (US$35), Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa (US$30). Climb Pidurangala at dawn for the view of Sigiriya.
- Kandy, 1 night. The Tooth Temple (LKR 3,000) and Kandy Lake.
- Nuwara Eliya and Ella, 2 nights. Go from Kandy to Nanu Oya by road and take the scenic train to Ella. Visit a tea factory and see the Nine Arches Bridge.
- South coast, 2 to 3 nights. Galle Fort, then Mirissa or Tangalle. Whales from Mirissa run November to April.
If you hold a Cultural Triangle round ticket, it covers Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the museums for 2 months from first use. For a skeleton, see the 4-day itinerary and extend it.
For hotels along the loop, check Booking.com for Kandy stays before choosing a base.
Return visit: pick one theme
A second trip works better as a deep dive than as another loop.
- Walking the tea country. The Pekoe Trail has 22 stages over about 300 km. Some stages have had storm reroutes, so check pekoetrail.org per stage.
- Adam’s Peak. The night climb runs only in pilgrimage season, from 23 December 2026 to Vesak Poya in May 2027. Outside that window the climb is hazardous.
- Wild coast and parks. Udawalawe for elephants, Minneriya in August to October, and Yala for leopards. Yala blocks close in dry spells, so check with the Department of Wildlife Conservation first.
- East coast. Arugam Bay for surf from May to September, and Pigeon Island snorkelling.
Seasons decide the order
The southwest monsoon (May to September) wets the south, west and hills, while the northeast monsoon (October to February) wets the north, east and Cultural Triangle. Run the loop in the order that puts the wet region first or last in your month, and always allow a spare day after the hills, where landslides can slow roads from October to December.
Rules to carry
Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Do not pose with your back to a Buddha statue or show a Buddha tattoo, as arrest and deportation have followed.
Verdict: first-timers should take 7 days on the classic loop, and returners should pick a single theme.
