Two Evenings in Areni Wine Country
Areni is a village of vines and red cliffs, not a resort. There are no spas in the village itself, and no grand hotels; the romance here comes from wine, long dinners and quiet walks. Jermuk, about an hour away, is the nearest spa town. For couples, the sensible plan is two evenings, with a driver or tour transport on any day that includes a tasting.
First evening: the hilltop
The Momik WineCube sits on a hilltop among the vines, and Nver and Narine Nazaryan host the tastings. Guides call it best in the evening. Opening hours of about 11:00 to 19:00 are quoted, so book for the late afternoon and ask for 24 hours’ notice. A stone-carving masterclass can be added, and the tasting price is given when you book.
If you prefer a table, Hin Areni sells a VIP tasting at 12,000 AMD with a cellar tour, a Wine Bank tour, three classic and three Reserve wines and a cheese platter. Confirm whether the price covers one or two people, and reserve by phone or at tours@hinareniwine.am .
Second evening: dinner in Yeghegnadzor
Old Bridge Winery is at Yerevanyan Highway 1 in Yeghegnadzor, the next town after Areni, and not in Areni village. The winery and its restaurant keep daily hours of 12:00 to 21:30, which suits a late table. The Old Bridge B&B is a separate building at Levonyan 16, so you will travel between dinner and bed.
Earlier in the day, Trinity Canyon Vineyards in Aghavnadzor offers a winemaker-led tasting with cheese and bread. It lasts about 1.5 hours and booking sites show roughly US$32 to 34 per person, with 24 hours’ notice.
Where to sleep
Areni Wine Art is a guesthouse in the village that is listed on booking sites, and a lunch with tasting at a local house appears on tour listings. Areni House B&B, the Areni Wine Cellar guesthouse and Siran Guest House are other village options. Rates move with the season, so check before you book.
A walk at Noravank
Noravank is about 10 km up the gorge from Areni, and the colour of the cliffs is the reason to go in the afternoon. The monastery was founded in 1105, and the church of Surb Astvatsatsin, finished in 1339, is attributed to Momik. A trail of 2.8 km links the ruined village of Amaghu to the monastery, and it makes an easy walk for two. The stair on the west facade of Surb Astvatsatsin is narrow and has no handrail, so stay off it. Carry water and go by day.
One short archaeological stop
The Areni-1 cave is about 2 km from the village and holds the remains of a winery from about 4100 BC. It is a small, dry and dusty site, so a short look is enough. Hin Areni’s second tasting room next door makes the stop easy to fit in.
