Trails and Village Walks Near Areni
Areni is too small to offer a city-style walking tour. The village can be wandered in under an hour, and the serious walking is in the canyon above it and in the Yeghegis valley. This page ranks the options from easiest to hardest.
Easy: the village and the church hill The lanes, the Arpa bridge and the wineries make a loose, unmarked stroll. The Holy Mother of God church, completed in 1321, is about half a kilometre north of the village on a hill, and entry is free.

Staying Several Days Around Areni
Travel advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, and the US lists Armenia at Level 2 with the Azerbaijan border region marked Do Not Travel. Areni, Noravank and the sights in this guide are outside those areas. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you leave, and keep to main roads in Syunik and Gegharkunik.

Two Evenings in Areni Wine Country
Areni is a village of vines and red cliffs, not a resort. There are no spas in the village itself, and no grand hotels; the romance here comes from wine, long dinners and quiet walks. Jermuk, about an hour away, is the nearest spa town. For couples, the sensible plan is two evenings, with a driver or tour transport on any day that includes a tasting.
First evening: the hilltop The Momik WineCube sits on a hilltop among the vines, and Nver and Narine Nazaryan host the tastings.
