A Couple's Weekend in Dhaka and Sreemangal
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban) and the US warns against travelling there, so couples should not plan any trip in that region. The UK also says terrorist attacks are very likely and that hartals and demonstrations can turn violent quickly, so avoid them and stay in on strike days. Street crime is up since 2024, with bag snatching from motorbikes and CNG auto-rickshaws, which makes evening taxis worth planning carefully. See FCDO advice and travel.state.gov before you book.
Dhaka is not a romance destination
Most couples will find Dhaka loud, crowded and hot, with little in the way of waterfront cafes or scenic walks. Romance here means small pockets of calm: a good hotel dinner, a quiet evening by the lake, a meal both of you will remember, and, if you have a few days, a train out to the tea country. Plan the quiet parts deliberately and keep the rest of the schedule light.
Hotel dinners
The international hotels are the most reliable source of quiet. The Westin Dhaka is in Gulshan, in the northern diplomatic and business district. InterContinental Dhaka is on Minto Road, in the former Ruposhi Bangla building, and opened as an IHG hotel in December 2018 (see the IHG announcement ). Amari Dhaka is also listed. A buffet or chef’s menu at this level can run from about 3,000 to 6,000 BDT per person, so ask the hotel for current prices and reserve a table.
An early evening by Dhanmondi Lake
Rabindra Sarobar, beside Dhanmondi Lake, is a local gathering place with footpaths, tea stalls and sometimes live music in the evening. Treat it as a pleasant walk rather than a scenic escape, since the lake is an ordinary urban one. Go before dark, hold on to bags, and arrange your ride home in advance through a ride-hailing app, checking the driver and the plate.
Biryani for two
A shared plate of Old Dhaka’s mutton kacchi biryani is an honest, memorable dinner. Haji Biryani, founded in 1939, has its main branch on Kazi Alauddin Road in Nazira Bazar, and Nanna Biryani is another well established name. Imitations use similar names, so confirm the address. Expect to pay a few hundred BDT per person, and come at lunch if you want to avoid evening traffic.
A train to the tea estates
Sreemangal, in the north-east, is the one real getaway within reach. Trains on the Parabat and Upaban Express services leave Kamalapur and need roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Tea terraces, rainforest walks and slow mornings set it apart from the capital. Grand Sultan Tea Resort and Golf is a listed property there; look at current rooms and reviews before choosing. You can compare stays on Booking.com and in Dhaka itself on Booking.com .
What to skip
The Buriganga at Sadarghat is a working river port with crowded launches and badly polluted water, not a place for a romantic boat ride. Solemn sites such as the Shaheed Minar and the 1971 memorials are not suitable for date outings. Do not take small boats at dusk or at night.
