Entebbe for Couples: Quiet Lake Evenings
Advisory, October 2026: The United States currently asks travellers not to go to Uganda (Level 4, raised from Level 3 in May 2026, citing a regional Ebola outbreak, crime, terrorism, unrest and the anti-LGBTQI+ law). The United Kingdom does not advise against travel to Uganda as a whole, but its FCDO warns of a very likely terrorist attack threat and reminds visitors that same-sex activity is illegal under the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. Read both pages in full, check travel.state.gov for the newest US level, and make sure your insurance covers the route you plan.
Entebbe offers couples calm rather than spectacle: warm lake evenings, a handful of well-regarded places to stay and very little noise. The law matters for some travellers, because same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Uganda.
The evening
Dinner at the shore. Restaurants such as 2Friends and Goretti’s sit on the beaches and are the usual picks for a lake view with dinner. Confirm that yours is open, and arrange the trip home before it gets dark.
A boat at sunset. Your hotel can book a licensed boatman. Lifejackets for both of you are a must, whatever the weather looks like.
The night
Ngamba Ecolodge. On the island sanctuary, 23 km south-east of Entebbe, luxury tented cottages host overnight guests. The official Chimpanzee Trust page mentions sunset cruises and bonfires. You travel out at 09:00 or 12:45, and book at chimpanzeetrust.org ahead of time, where the trust gives you the price.
Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa. At Kigo, on the Entebbe road between Kampala and the town, the resort combines an 18-hole course with the Serena Maisha spa. Ask for current room rates directly.
The day
Garden stroll. The Entebbe Botanical Gardens were laid out in 1898 and have shade, old trees and colobus monkeys. Check fees and opening hours before you visit, and keep snacks in a bag because the monkeys are wild.
A round of golf. Entebbe Golf Club, founded in 1901, welcomes visiting players; start at entebbegolfclub.com .
Keep out of the water
Lake Victoria at Entebbe is not for swimming, wading or paddling. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles live there, and police closed Aero, Spenah and Lido beaches after the drownings of Christmas 2015. Use the pool at your hotel.
