A Romantic Weekend in Kairouan
A weekend in Kairouan suits couples who like slow, cultural travel. The city is devout and quiet, with no beach, no cocktail scene and no late nights. The reward is atmosphere: pale walls, narrow lanes and a medina that feels lived in. Here is how to shape two days.
Where to base yourselves
The guesthouse option. Dar Hassine Allani, on Rue El Khadraouine in the medina, is a 3-star guesthouse. On booking sites it lists three air-conditioned rooms with a garden, a restaurant and a rooftop terrace. With so few rooms, reserve early. Check availability on a Kairouan stay search .
The hotel option. Hotel La Kasbah, on Avenue Ibn El Jazzar, belongs to the Golden Yasmine group and is listed as a 5-star. Check current rates before committing.
Day one
Arrive by midday, settle in and rest through the hottest hours. Late afternoon is for an easy walk through the souks, followed by supper on a terrace. Do not count on wine with dinner in the old town.
Day two
Rise early. The Great Mosque, a working place of worship, is calm in the first hour after opening at 07:30 in summer or 08:00 in winter. Non-Muslims keep out of the prayer hall but can look in through the open doors and walk the courtyard. Dress modestly, with hair covered for women. Closing time is 14:00, and 12:00 on Fridays.
Afterwards, buy a box of makroudh, the date-filled semolina pastry sold by weight, and take it to a cafe for mint tea.
Staying graceful under sales pressure
Touts may offer a rooftop view or claim a festival is on. A calm no is enough. Entry to the Governor’s House carpet shop is free and has a terrace, and the selling is reported to be persistent, so ask prices first.
Making it longer

Season and cost
Spring and autumn are comfortable, while July and August often pass 40 C. Monument tickets changed on 1 April 2026, so a major site is roughly 20 to 30 TND for foreign adults. Carry cash in dinars. No trains reach Kairouan, so come by louage or bus from Tunis, about 126 km, or from Sousse. The official monument page lists opening times.
