Kairouan Plus El Jem and Sousse: 3 Days
Read the US State Department and UK FCDO advisories for Tunisia before booking, because some border and military areas are closed to tourists and travel against FCDO advice can void insurance.
Kairouan makes a useful hinge between the capital and the coast. This three day plan keeps the legs short and uses only places and distances that hold up.
Day 1: Kairouan
Arrive in the morning by louage or bus, as no train serves the city. Tunis is about 126 km away, and the trip takes around 2 hours. Visit the Great Mosque courtyard first, then walk the souks and the Mosque of the Three Doors facade. Finish at the Sidi Amor Abada museum if it is not Monday.
Where to sleep. Dar Hassine Allani is a medina guesthouse with three air-conditioned rooms, a garden, a restaurant and a rooftop terrace on booking listings. Hotel La Kasbah on Avenue Ibn El Jazzar is listed as a 5-star property. Rates change by season, so confirm them before paying. Try a Kairouan hotel search to compare.
Day 2: El Jem and Sousse
El Jem is about 70 km away, home to a huge Roman amphitheatre. No direct public transport runs from Kairouan, so hire a driver or change at Sousse. After El Jem, continue to Sousse for its UNESCO medina and ribat, and stay on the coast.
Day 3: Monastir or beach time
The ribat at Monastir dates from 796 CE, and the Bourguiba mausoleum is nearby. Alternatively, spend the day on a Sousse beach, because Kairouan itself is inland and has none.
Variation: starting from Tunis
Begin with the Bardo museum, closed on Mondays, and Carthage, then take a louage or bus to Kairouan and follow the plan above. The 3-day Tunisia itinerary covers the northern leg in more detail.
Costs
A new heritage tariff began on 1 April 2026, with major monuments at roughly 20 to 30 TND for foreign adults and a further rise in January 2027. Ask at ticket booths whether a grouped ticket is sold. Carry dinars for fares, tickets and the souks.
What not to attach to this trip
The Sahara towns of Tozeur, Nefta and Douz are 300 km or more to the south and make a separate journey with a licensed operator. Never route a trip through Sbeitla or Kasserine, where the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel, and note that Tamerza, Midès and Chebika are near the Algerian border. Check the official UK advice before planning anything south or west.
Seasonal notes
Summer heat above 40 C is common, so spring and autumn are more comfortable. Islamic festivals such as the Mawlid follow the lunar calendar and arrive about 11 days earlier each year.
