Kairouan Walking Routes and Medina Rules

Kairouan is flat, which makes walking easy, but the heat and the early closing times shape every route. Here are two options and the rules that apply to both.

Route A: the medina loop

Allow about 3 hours and start by 08:00.

  1. Martyrs Gate (Bab ech-Chouhada). The walls here were restored by the end of 2025, after a section fell in December 2023. Admire them from below.
  2. Souk lanes. Follow the main streets inward. Brass, leather and textiles fill the stalls.
  3. Three Doors facade. The mosque dates from 866 CE and is still in use, so stand in the street.
  4. Great Mosque courtyard. End here. The prayer hall is closed to non-Muslims, though the open doors allow a look. Hours are 07:30 or 08:00 to 14:00, and to 12:00 on Fridays.

Route B: museums and outskirts

This one needs taxis between stops, because the sights are spread out.

  • Sidi Amor Abada museum, in the Abada suburb. Giant swords, anchors and chests from the Ghar el-Melh naval base. Closed Mondays.
  • Raqqada museum, 10 to 12 km away in a former presidential residence, for the blue Quran in the first-floor manuscript room. Closed Mondays.
  • Aghlabid Basins surroundings, where restoration has run since July 2025. Ask whether the gate is open.

Opening times differ by season: 08:00 to 14:00 in summer and 09:00 to 16:00 in winter.

Street rules

  • A free rooftop view or a claimed festival is a lead-in to a carpet shop. Decline kindly.
  • At the Governor’s House, entry costs nothing and there is a roof terrace, but staff push sales. Agree prices before tea.
  • Cover shoulders and knees. Women should carry a scarf.
  • Skip the Souks El Majel, which are closed and neglected.

Heat

July and August regularly pass 40 C. White stone has no shade, so carry water, wear a hat and finish by early afternoon.

Money

Carry dinars in small notes. The April 2026 tariff makes a major monument roughly 20 to 30 TND for foreign adults, with a rise in January 2027. Pupils and students pay 2 TND.

Getting to the start

No trains serve Kairouan. Louages and buses run from Tunis, about 126 km away, and from Sousse, and the stations are at the medina’s edge. Your hotel can name the nearest one.
