Phnom Penh Romance Beyond the Brochure
Skip the guidebook line about a candlelit river cruise being the top romantic move in Phnom Penh. It’s good, but the better one happens 37 floors up.
Sora Skybar, on top of Rosewood Phnom Penh inside the parametric Vattanac Capital Tower, puts you on a cantilevered open-air terrace with the entire river confluence lit up below. Go after dark, order slowly, and let the view do the work.
The classic sunset cocktail cruise still earns its reputation, though. Wooden riverboats such as the Kanika Boat, Cambo Cruise, or Le Tonlé leave from Sisowath Quay and drift out toward the Chaktomuk confluence, where the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac rivers meet, timed so the Royal Palace spires catch the last gold light before dark.
For something with more history attached, Raffles Hotel Le Royal, standing since 1929, pours its signature Femme Fatale cocktail in the Elephant Bar, a drink created for Jacqueline Kennedy’s 1967 visit and still on the menu today. The colonial high tea here works just as well for an afternoon as the cocktail does for evening.
Dinner belongs in Bassac Lane or BKK1, where courtyard villas hold restaurants like Topaz, Malis (from chef Luu Meng), and Yi Sang. Order Kampot pepper crab, river lobster in coconut curry, or fish amok steamed in banana leaf, all Royal Khmer dishes built for sharing across a small table.
If you want the day to end slower than it started, book a couples’ traditional Khmer spa package at somewhere like Bodia Spa or Samatha Spa. Dry Khmer massage, herbal compresses, and honey body wraps run for hours, not the standard 60 minutes, so treat it as an afternoon rather than an errand.
For where to actually sleep, boutique colonial properties like The Pavilion, Plantation Urban Resort & Spa, or La Rose Suites sit in quiet garden compounds well away from the main traffic corridors, which matters more in Phnom Penh than in most cities, since the street noise outside those quiet pockets never really stops.
Verdict: if you can only do two things, pair the Sora Skybar night view with a Bassac Lane dinner; the sunset cruise is worth it too, but it depends more on the weather cooperating than either of the other two.
