Hot-air ballooning at dawn
Windpassenger has flown EASA-certified balloons over the Porto and north region since 2004, timed for the calm air just before sunrise, a distinctly different start to a morning than anything at ground level.
The free version: a sunset at Crystal Palace Gardens
Jardim do Palácio de Cristal costs nothing and stays open into the evening, with views over the Douro that hold up against anything paid for. A walk along Ribeira afterward, on the river’s north bank, extends the evening without a ticket.

Spring and autumn bring milder crowds and gentler weather than a hot, busy summer, worth weighing if the trip is flexible on dates.
