Salzburg Date Ideas for Couples
Ideas for couples, from free to a splurge
Salzburg works for couples because the old town is compact, the evenings are musical and the hills give you views for the price of a short lift ride. This page starts with the things that cost nothing and builds up to a special dinner. Prices are 2026 figures or ranges in euros, and anything on a dinner or concert menu should be confirmed when you book.
Free: a river walk at dusk
Cross the Makartsteg footbridge, also called the Marko-Feingold-Steg, where couples hang engraved padlocks on the mesh. Continue on the Franz-Josef-Kai promenade as the fortress lights come on above the rooftops. Go about an hour before sunset and the sky does most of the work.
Mirabell Gardens are also free. Walk through them in the early morning, when the Pegasus Fountain, the hedge theatre and the Dwarf Garden are quiet, and the fortress sits behind the flowerbeds.
Low cost: the cliff and the ridge
The Mönchsberg lift runs through the rock in about 30 seconds and costs EUR 3.40 single or EUR 4.80 return. At the top, a path follows the ridge past old defensive towers to the terrace of the Museum der Moderne, with the old town spread out below.
For a classic panorama, the fortress funicular and Basic ticket cost about EUR 15.50 per adult. A cheaper Panorama ticket for the viewing tower is sold in timed early and evening slots at about EUR 12.80.
Mid range: music in a marble room
The Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace hosts candlelit chamber concerts, with programmes of Mozart, Vivaldi and Beethoven. Seats are priced from about EUR 38 up to EUR 48. The room is also where the young Mozart and his sister are said to have played, which gives the evening some weight. Reserve ahead for summer weekends.
Splurge: dinner in a very old dining room
The St. Peter Stiftskulinarium sits in the abbey precinct and traces its records to the year 803, which makes it a candidate for Europe’s oldest restaurant. You can eat in stone vaults or Baroque rooms. The dinner concert, with period-dress musicians singing between courses, costs roughly EUR 75 to EUR 95 per person before drinks. Book at least a few weeks ahead for August.
A cheaper evening option is a drink on the Steinterrasse, the roof terrace of Hotel Stein at Steingasse 1, which faces the fortress and cathedral domes. Arrive before sunset and book a table in summer.
A half day out of town
Schloss Fuschl is a former archbishops’ hunting lodge on a peninsula in Lake Fuschl, about 20 km east of Salzburg in the Salzkammergut. Come for a lakeside terrace lunch and a stroll along the shore path. Check bus times before you go, or hire a car.
On the south side of the city, Hellbrunn park is open for walks in season and holds the glass gazebo from The Sound of Music. You can see it from outside only, as the door is kept locked.
By season
- Winter: the Christkindlmarkt on Dom- und Residenzplatz is planned for about 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. The dates come from a secondary source, so check them.
- Summer: the Festival, from 17 July to 30 August 2026, fills hotels and concert halls.
- Cold weather: take gloves for the bridge and the ridge path.
Where to stay
The left bank near the cathedral puts concerts on your doorstep. The right bank near Linzer Gasse is a little quieter. For a two night stay, compare rooms early.
